Very glad to hear that - this is a difficult situation at best.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the well wishes. Had surgery late Tuesday. Doc put in three titanium screws and a plate in the trochanter. BHR is fine although in the way for a normal fix of this type of fracture. Hope to be out of the hospital Friday, maybe Saturday. No weight bearing for six to twelve weeks.
They can take the plate out in a year if it's bothersome. Key is getting bone to heal. Also 48 hrs of post op antibiotics and two weeks oral. Pain is tolerable today going to be on crutches for awhile. Not going to mess anything up by being impatient. Several docs also told me Bhr had nothing to do with the fracture, would've happened on the other side as well. I just wasn't going fast enough to slide. Hip took the entire impact. I'll keep you all posted.

Next time, remember to keep the dirty side down.

Good news spencer! Next time go faster?  :o  But good to hear that the results were positive and the HR wasn't involved.

Hey  Hip,

Doing a little better each day. I'm 16 days post surgery. I cannot put any weight on the right leg for another 4-10 weeks. But i can use one crutch and handrail to go upstairs now. My day consists of sitting in the recliner and coaching my tri clients via the internet and phone, reading and watching the series Breaking Bad on Netflix, as well as watching the Stanley Cup playoffs, NBA playoffs, Giro d'Italia and starting Sunday, the Tour of California.
I also use a wheelchair to get around the kitchen and crutches to go anywhere else. Monday i went to the doc and posted my current x-ray in the gallery, check it out. My next appointment is June 1st and I'll get a better idea of how how the healing process is going. I'm definitely optimistic about the outcome as long as i adhere to the restrictions.

take care,

spencer

Hang in there, Spencer.  This is going to be a tough one.  You can do it and be back in the game though,  we will all be behind you.  Just like in your races!

Just looked at it. Lot of hardware, but sure looks like the hip is fine. Good luck, will be wishing good things for you.

Had my second xray today and all is proceeding well although slowly. Doc gave me permission to toe touch while using the crutches and putting the foot flat on the floor while standing still. It's a small but significant step forward (pun intended). I go back for my next xray on July 13 (yes, it's Friday the 13th) and if all goes as planned then full weight bearing and rehab start. I posted today's xray in the gallery (not quite as good as the first in terms of quality)

best,

spencer

Slowly is OK, as long as you're moving forword.  Hang in there, Spencer, you can get there.  It's going to take all your patience, but you'll get there!
