I am curious about the average age of people on this site. My surgeon told me that 30% of patients that he sees with OA in their hips are in their 40's. I was 40 when I first experienced pain in my groin. I am now 47 and having bhr next week. I am also curious how many peoples problems stem from hip dysplasia which is the cause of my hip joint degeneration.

Hi Barbara,
I am 37 and scheduled for LHR in just a few weeks, the 29th in fact, but I was referred by a coworker who also was 37 when he had the procedure done.  That was only last year.  I was at Physical therapy and there was a 26yo who had just had the procedure done.  I think we all are just tired of being in pain and limiting what we do each day.  That is just not very fun in my book.  Best of luck. Hi Barbara,
I'm 41 and had my left hip resurfaced in August.  I had degenerative joint disease which was secondary to dysplasia.  Apparently, my hip was dislocated at birth and no one noticed for 11 months!  When my parents finally brought me to a specialist, I was put in a series of casts and braces for the next year of so.  My parents told me the specialist said then that my hip would probably last until I was in my early forties.  He was right!  The hip formed with a very shallow socket and the head of my femur was flat on one side - not a very congruent combination, resulting in a lot of friction and therefore wear and tear over the years.  I started having pain when I was 28.  Amazingly, I've been an athletic and active person my whole life and played hockey for 7 years in my twenties until my hip started to hurt.

My surgeon told me that hip dysplasia is the most common condition in his resurfacing patients.  Since I had a such a shallow socket, he had to dig out a socket for me in which he could place the acetabular component.  Apparently, dysplasics often have poorly shaped sockets and some companies even make special acetabular components for dysplasic sockets.  So, don't worry too much about the dysplasia.  It's amazing what they can do!

I hope you find comfort in the fact that you're not alone out there and you're not the first!

This is my very first post.  I am 62 and just starting to research my options.  I experienced hip pain intermittently for the last 10 years or so. My chiropractor has been helping me but suggested I go see an orthopedic doctor.  I was surprised to find out the hip is bone on bone, b/c I am having pain with walking but it hasn't affected me in any other way.  My mother and sister both had hip replacements so I suspect it may be genetic.  I don't want to go that route if I can get by with a resurfacing.  I still want to play some volleyball, and maybe do some occasional waterskiing if possible.

I had RBHR on 6/26/08 at the age of 49.

I was 3 months shy of turning 45 when I had my surgery in January.  It was probably a good 8 years prior to that that I started experiencing issues in that hip, though they first told me it was a pinched sciatic nerve.  I think it was 3-4 years ago that they took xrays and said it was OA.
