Hi all-

My date is March 30th with Dr. Gross-  right HR. I have osteopenia, so I'm on the slow recovery protocol- 6 weeks on crutches followed by 4 weeks with a cane. Should I rent a lift chair for the first month or so? I'm thinking it'll be so much easier with the 90 degree rule. Anyone out there do it? Or didn't and wish they had? Did you sleep in it? Some hip patients say it's easier to sleep in the recliner for the first week because they were so generally uncomfortable!

Thanks!

Hi Cara

I bought one as it was cheaper than renting one! I would really have been lost without it and I for one was certainly very glad that I had it for the first six weeks after my op.

A recliner is real nice to have, but I really don't think a lift chair is necessary. I bought a LaFuma zero-gravity recliner and really loved it. As long as it's not too low and you can go from upright to reclined and back fairly easily it'll be fine. And yes I did sleep in it, worked very well for that.

On the other hand, in the hotel for the first two/three days I practically lived in the hotel armchair which did not recline and was low and I still managed fine. I put a pillow on it to make it a little higher. Recliner at home was much more comfortable though.

FYI, to get out of a chair you keep you operated leg extended and scoot your body to the edge of the chair. Grab the crutch on your operated side and use your other leg and other arm to stand up. Then you grab the other crutch and hobble about.

We didn't get a lift recliner, but did buy a regular one. Loved it. Still love it. Good for sleeping when I can't get comfortable even now.

Thanks everyone!

Ok, I'll plan on getting something then. I'll have to have 2 hip surgeries for sure, AND my Dad has a bad back as well, so a purchase makes more sense than renting.
