Hi,

I had my op on the 4th of December 2008.

One week later I had an arthritic attack in my operated sides knee.

Three weeks later I developed an ankle problem (like I had twisted my ankle) on the same side.

Five weeks later I developed a problem in my foot (like a pulled muscle), again - on my operated side.

Is it common to get all of these problems?

Yes, I had that problem with both my knee and ankle, I had asked about that and found that others indeed had some problems.  You are using those muscles in good and bad ways that you have not in several years, most of the time it works itself out, don't push it too much, relax and it should resolve itself.  Make sure that your posture is straight and you do not twist in an awkward position.

Thanks Chuck,

I went to the hospital and an X-ray ruled out a break in my foot so they think it may be a DVT and gave me the appropriate blood thinning medicine.

I'm having a scan tomorrow to check for DVTs.

It feels like a pulled muscle in my foot (but then again, I don't know what a DVT feels like!)

It is frustrating because I'm five weeks post op, but I've lost 3 weeks of recovery due to these injuries!

The first night after surgery I woke up in the middle of the night experiencing significant pain in my left foot (good side) which felt like ghout.  I mentioned it to the nurse and the surgeon on his morning rounds, both looked at me like I had two heads.  It eventually went away.

Hopefully it turns out to be nothing, although it's good you went to see a doctor.... did you have any other symptoms?  Swelling, Pain in the leg
calf tender?  Leg tenderness? Swelling of the leg? Warmth of the leg or foot? Redness?

Your first post mentioned symptoms like a twisted knee or ankle which is common when we use our legs in ways we have not used in a while. 

It's funny a while back I told a guy who had some of the warning symptoms of DVT to contact his doctor and it turned out to be nothing, you posted minor things and it could end up being DVT.  LOL I could end up batting .000%

Well my foot was (is) red, warm and swollen but my leg and calf are fine.

Well.... I can give myself 1/2 credit.... had you said swelling and redness Dr. Chuck would have nicely tried to (without scarring you) get to a doctor soon.

It reminds me of a guy who posted on here symptoms of a slipped cup, well I figured that is what it was, but hey, I am no doctor but I kept trying to get him to get x-rays so he could get some relief and get the cup fixed, he finally saw his doctor and that is what it was.  Real nice guy who turned out to be an Aussie.  I have even chatted with him on the phone.

In the end I hope this turns out to be pulled muscles, either way it's good that you're finding out what is wrong.

Any chance that you could post your story about your problem?  It ends up being really great info for patients when Pat can post stories, even if they end up being a problem.

Well my foot was (is) red, warm and swollen but my leg and calf are fine.

About four or five days after surgery, I developed pretty severe swelling and tenderness around the ankle of my operated side. It was very tender to the touch, and was nearly impossible to try to walk on. It gradually went away over the next week or two. In looking back, I think that it might have been a clot, but I never pursued it.

At around the time the swelling from the operation went down in my leg to my knee at around 10 days, I had pain for a week or so, but the best thing for me was to walk.  I used ice only in small portions,(being in Hawaii-ice is cold and not a pleasant thing, but it helped, but walking helped that problem more)

I got a day of knee knocking around 3 weeks in, that went as fast as it came.

Then at around 7 weeks, I think from walking in the sand so much and walking in my old slippers, my fallen arches on my foot gave me some pain.  But now that I am back to going to work and now wearing shoes with orthotics for my arches to support me, and new slippers, that seems to be not bothering me.   

Funny, now I have an itchy shin, I want to blame my surgery...nah, must of got some bugs from my outdoor dogs, but its funny that things happen that would of anyways, not trying to be smart da kine, but I was thinking it was maybe a chance, then I remember I had most of these aches and pains before besides the first paragraph and now that I can use my leg, my body is reacting to its usage again.

ps.   As a very minor aside.  After both of my BHRs the bruising around the operation site moved slowly down my leg until I ended up with purple feet.  It looked very strange, but was just one of those things the body (or at least my body) does.   ;D

Just got back from my scan...

Thankfully it isn't a DVT!

The doctor tried to remove some of the fluid (which was fun!) but couldn't get any out so it isn't fluid.

His best guess is maybe a form of gout (I do have a history of gout like symptoms in my knees sometimes).

Nothing to do with my problem, but a little anecdote anyway!

As soon as I got home, I got a phone call from the doctor who treated me saying I needed to return to the hospital.

When I got to the hospital, the doctor explained that whilst tidying up, he had accidentally left a needle behind and a nurse had later touched it and had blood on her finger. She doesn't know if it had pierced her skin or if it was just off the needle (I suspect it was mine because due to the blood thinners, there was blood everywhere!).

So I had to answer 20 questions about my private life and give even more blood so that they can do tests for HIV, hepatitis etc...

Not relevant, just thought I'd share what kind of day I've had!

I know it was a pain in the butt for you, but, I can see the other side.  My brother in-law is a police officer and last year he was searching a druggie and even asked the guy if he had any needles on him and even though the guy told him NO, my brother in-law got stuck with a needle in his pocket.  After convincing the guy to do a blood test the druggie ended up testing positive for hep.  What a bummer.

I am sure your good deed will really help the gal who got stuck.

I was more than happy to help and assured her that if the situation was reversed, I would have reacted exactly the same.

I hope the doctor hasn't got into trouble - he was really good to me.

I now have two pains in my foot... the original pain and a new one on the other side where the doctor was searching for fluids :-)

Well.... now you are balanced out, you should have no pain now, right?   ;D
