I know every doc has their own protocol, some more conservative than others, and a lot depends on the approach too. I wanted to share the below list and get some feedback whether you stuck to similar restrictions.

Quote1. No lifting or carrying ≥ 40 lbs. for 1 year, sitting while lifting weight is OK.

2. NO squatting exercises or straight leg raise exercises for 1 year.

3 . No legs exercises with weights for 1 year.

4. No leg machine exercises. No hang gliding, power lifting, leg lifts and hamstring curls..

5. No running, jogging, jumping, skiing for 1 year.

6. Planks, sit-ups, push-ups 5 to 6 month's post-op. Crunches OK at 6 weeks. 7. Treadmill, elliptical OK at 6 weeks. Start off slowly, limit time to 30-40 minutes. May gradually increase to a medium resistance. No cardio workouts, No spinning classes.

8. Swimming is OK at 6 weeks. Start off slow, 10 laps and gradually increasing by 10 laps a month.

9. Yoga is OK 6 weeks, no squatting or lunges.

10. SCUBA diving is OK at 6 weeks.

11. Roller skating and Ice skating is OK at 3-6 months after surgery depending on how you feel.

12. Hockey-NOT for 1 year.

13. Golf-OK at 3 months, but use a golf cart.

14. Massages-OK at 6 weeks, AVOID Hip/Incisional area for 4 months.

15. Sauna-OK at 6 weeks.

16. Hot Tubs - Personal tubs OK at 4 months, Public tubs OK at 6 months.

17. Motorcycle (Street bike) OK at 8-12 weeks. Motor Cross bike OK at 1 year.

18. Amusement park rides/roller coaster - OK 2-3 months after surgery.

19. Bowling-OK at 1 year. Or if your plant leg is the non-operative leg.

20. Please be sure to take 2000 mg of Calcium and 2000 units of Vitamin D daily for 1 year.

21. No driving for 6 weeks.

22. No active abduction exercises for 6 weeks post-op.

23. Bike is OK with minimal resistance.

24. For ANY DENTAL PROCEDURE you will need Antibiotic Protection LIFETIME call this office and we will prescribe for you.

25. COLONOSCOPY you will need Antibiotic Protection on the first 2 years after surgery.

26. CYSTOSCOPY, PROSTATE, KIDNEY and BLADDER SURGERY; speak with surgeon performing procedure for antibiotic recommendation, if any, for that procedure.

Most of these seem reasonable, but a few stand out to me. Like no squats for 1 year. As an example, i see other docs have squats introduced in week 2-6.

I get different philosophy, but 6 weeks vs 1 year seems like more than that.

Leg exercises, jogging, abduction (this one for 6 weeks likely due to lateral approach probably makes sense) are a few others that stood out a bit.

Did you get this from Dr. Brooks? I didn't get this list, but I guess I am only 2.5 weeks out from surgery, so he will probably give it to me at my 6 week. He never told me to take the calcium though so that is interesting...

yeap. it's from his office. I got it at the pre-op visit about a week before the surgery.

These seem freakishly conservative, unless one has some sort of other weak bone issue.I certainly carried things over 40 lbs well before a year. Squats were part of my pt as I progressed. Sme of the next few don't apply to me, but I know those who did participate in these activities before a year. I was allowed to start swimming as soon as my incision completely healed. Laps aren't specific since pool sizes vary. I started with 400m, and gradually worked my way up as my body was ready. It's nice that you're allowed to dive at 6 weeks, but if you're not allowed  to lift much weight I don't know how he thinks you're going to manage the weight of the tank, etc. I also don't see how one could drag oneself back onto a boat at only six weeks, either. As much as I love to dive, I would wait until I could manage that. Dr. Pritchett allows driving after your first post op appointment. My left hip was resurfaced on March 1. Pie Day is March 14, and one of my favorite pizza places was having a great Pie Day special, so you bet I took my walker and hobbled down to my car and drove 25 miles to take advantage. While I normally advocate for listening to your doctor, I also advocate for listening to your body. If your body says it's ready for some of these activities, well, it's your body. Just don't overdo it.
