Hi UK members,

Hi, I am Bernard, a Senior Lecturer from the University of Essex (UK). I am investigating the biomechanical safety of high-impact exercises after a hip resurfacing procedure, and I hope to invite 5 people with a hip resurfacing to participate in this highly novel study. What we are going to do is to collect high-resolution biomechanics data, and build computer models of a hip which have been resurfaced and feed the data into the model, to understand how different activities influence the bone and implant stress.

Eligibility to join:1) < 85 years, 2) 12 months after a hip resurfacing, and 3) already returned to high-impact activities (running, tennis, etc) for 3 months.

What is involved? A single day (~4hrs in total) of biomechanics testing and filling out questionnaires.

Location: Colchester, Essex.

Reimbursement: We can reimburse your travels (car, train, etc), and provide you with a £20 voucher as a token of appreciation.

Interested or have any questions? Please drop me an email at bl19622@essex.ac.uk

I will set up a time to have a chat over Zoom/Teams/Telephone with you to answer all your questions.

Caution Wide Load

Unfortunately I’m only 4 months post op LBHR. But this sounds very interesting.
Thought I’d reply as no one else has.
Hope you get some Guinea pigs 😃

I went to Bernard's laboratory last week in response to a similar request for volunteers on the Hiprunner website, where he was looking for athletes with THR devices who still ran etc.

I had an overnight stay at the university and a full day of testing with reflective markers stuck all over me, multiple cameras, and force-plates in the gym floor. Because I also have a BHR he can use my data for this research as well.

It turns out that my fake hips are uncannily like natural ones, with no asymmetry during normal running and walking, despite being of completely different construction and different ages. I am still wearing an activity-tracking device, for 7 days in total, which was exposed to a half-marathon race last Sundy as well as general fitness walks and jogs in the week.

A very interesting experience altogether, with very friendly and interesting people.
