Hello. Thanks everyone for sharing so much on this website.  It is very strengthening to read the stories and share in all of your insights.  I am scheduled to have my bilateral hip resurfacing done with Dr. Gross June 29.  I am very excited, as well as concerned about the coming operation.  A little about me... I am 44, male, and have been very athletic all of my life.  This has been my first year of pain, and the first year (maybe the second) where my life was drastically affected by my hips.  My wife has been complaining to me about my limp for 10 years, but this year is really the first where my hips started to change the way I am.  I was just outside trying to set the trampoline up for the kids, and had to come in to rest and take some pain killers.  I have tried to ween my way off alleve and advil, but today, wow, I really needed something.  I have two knifes sticking in my hips.  I guess I just wanted to hop on and say how much I appreciate all folks have written.  I am nervous about the coming months, but feel I have done my best to prepare.  My weight is down 20 lbs to 200, I am in great shape, except for my hips.  I started working out 4 days a week in the gym, and worked on changing my diet and eating healthy in an effort to deal with my pain.  I also started stretching, a first for me.  I now stretch 30 minutes a day.  However, with everything I have tried, my hips have jumped from manageable to unmanageable.  Such a bummer, and it took me a long time to consider surgery.  Finding this site and learning about resurfacing has been wonderful.  I was so worried my athletic push the limit life was over. I now feel I have a chance to get back to normal.  I stopped taking walks with my dog about a year ago.  I look forward to getting back to the things I enjoy!  I will try to keep posting as I go through this procedure.  Thanks again everyone for sharing so much great information. I wish I was resurfaced yesterday!

Hi Rob

Welcome to Hip Talk.  The folks here are very supportive and full of knowledge.

Dr. Gross is one of the best in the US.  You will be glad to get out of pain and back to an active live after your surgery.  It will take a bit of time to heal, but you will be amazed how great you will feel within weeks to months of your surgery.  Some people heal very quickly and others take more time.  In the end, however, we all end up in the same place - pain free and active.

Ask questions - there are a lot of Dr. Gross patients here.

Good Luck and stay in touch.

Rob,

Congratulations on making the decision. It is one that you will not regret.  I had my left hip done in January, and will have my right hip done on May 6--only 6 more days.  I can tell you that I also put off surgery and listened to the comments about limping and waddling for years.  It took an increase of pain in the past 18 months to prompt me to do something--it was only getting worse and I was doing less and less of the things I love.  You can read about my journey in "Todd's bilateral story".  I tried to chronicle the progression after the surgery so that I would have a record to compare to my next surgery.  At almost 4 months post op, I feel like new.  Jogging would be hard to do yet, but as far as everything else, my new hip is performing better than my unoporated hip--by leaps.  Flexibility, ROM, lifting my knee to step up and over things is possible and pain-free again.  Strength gets better each week, and will continue to improve.  Although I look forward to the next surgery, I'm not looking excited about the first few weeks of recovery.  It's going to be hard to step back again.  You are probably wise to do both hips at the same time.   Good luck and keep us updated.  The collective insight from the people who have shared their stories on this website has been so important.  Hope you share your story and progress.
takk,
Todd

Hi Rob,

You will not regret it mate, the end result will be worth it but be patient and take each day at a time. I am 14 weeks post from LBHR and each day I see little improvements.

Good luck

Terry,

How are you getting along?  I find that as I keep getting closer to normal I tend to write less.  I do keep tabs on things most days however.  Hope you're feeling good.

Rob,

Welcome to the site.  It has been such a treasure trove of information and source of support and encouragement.  I am one of Dr. Gross's double resurfacing hippies, having both hips done in the same week during the middle of March.  You have made a great choice in selecting your surgeon and you are in very good hands.

I am actually writing this from Columbia, SC.  I flew back today for my six week post op exam with Dr. Gross and Lee Webb tomorrow.

I wish you the best of luck and please ask if you have any questions.  There are several us Dr. Gross bilat's on the forum.  I haven't been as active here in the last couple of weeks as I was in the weeks right after surgery.

Hi, Rob,

Regardless of all the reassurance in the world, we all worry when our life has been seriously crimped by something as painful and usually unexpected as hip joint failure. We worry as much or more about the proposed cure and if it will give us our life back.

I'm 7 months post op with Dr. Bose in Chennai and I never made a better decision in my life. I'm 63 and a hands-on underground mining engineer. I was back at work on a steady basis 3 weeks after surgery, walking steep broken rock surfaces, climbing long ladders, and doing anything else I wanted - no limitations. Did I have occasional pains that scared the hell out of me? You betcha!! Did they mean anything? Just to slow down a bit and let the tissue heal. My 6-month x-ray looks just like my post-op pic. My 4.5" scar is just a trace. I drive my jeep, climb trees and mountains with the grandsons, and fly a small plane. I never have any pains.

I literally owe my life-style, if not my life, to Dr. Bose and World Med Assist.

Best advice I can give you is to get your leg muscles in the best shape you can before surgery, even if it hurts. Swimming is great. Fit going in, fit coming out.

You will not believe how normal you'll be!!

Good luck.
