Any advice is appreciated.
I had my left hip resurfaced Jan 13, 2021.  I experienced an infection in August/September last year which resulted in hospitalisation for over a week.

I cannot run longer than 10-15 minutes.  After that time my hip joint area feels foreign and I limp.  I often walk for 5 minutes and run better again only for the pain to return 5-10 minutes later.  The cycle repeats itself.  I try this varied 30 minute routine (5mins walk, 10mins run, 5min walk, 5 min run etc) up to 4.5k total, fatigued from riding, completely rested (3-4 days off everything), morning, night, during a gym stint of training and not.  It doesn't matter, the same thing occurs.  One would think if this was a muscle issue that the muscles would adapt in some way to the load.  This isn't the case.  I can have a week off doing any physical activity and the same result occurs.  I am at a loss.

My plan over the next few weeks is to get a blood test to see if the infection has completely disappeared and to return to the gym.  I've been hesitant to return to the gym because I was doing that prior to the infection.

Stretching the joint during flexion feels weird, almost like I have no control. To lie prone I have to pull the knee into the chest to stretch which cause pain in the joint.  Lowering into hip extension also feels strange.

I can ride with no issues.  Breaststroke kick is an out of body experience.

My question is, has anybody had this issue 12 months post surgery?  Others that I've spoken to have no such issues and are enjoying running again.  I can't run and I'm at my wits end. I wanted to return to Ironman Triathlon racing at some stage (completed 9 including Hawaii twice) but now I'd just be happy to run 5k without pain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yesterday, I jogged 35 minutes on a treadmill at a 13 minute mile pace at a 3 % uphill gradient.
I had no issues.  I will continue jogging on a treadmill, increasing my pace before venturing outdoors.
Have you tried jogging on a treadmill?
I'm mystified why some hip resurfacing individuals can jog/run but others can't?

Well I'm one of those BHR recipients that can't sustain a run longer than 5k. To run a 5k I need to warm up for at least 30 minutes. To work up to a 5k it takes me months of steady training. I still have pain but I can tolerate it. If I don't follow a consistent regimen, I pay for it with pain. If I experience any pain I have to stop immediately or pay a price. I can do most any other kind of exercise but long distance running is difficult for me. Frankly I have come to terms with this fact. If I want to run I limit to 1-2 miles. I know you don't want to hear this but this is my reality. Given all the other things I can do, I'm able to live with this minor obstacle

Good luck with your recovery.

Yesterday, I ran for 3 miles or 5 K on the treadmill at 5 mph or 12 minute/mile pace at +3% grade.  I warmed up for the 1st 3 minutes at a fast paced walk at 4.5 mph then cooled down for the last 3 minutes at 4 mph.  No issues.  Feeling great!

I was hoping to read some more insightful replies on this topic... anyone...?

Hey Aussidarren,

I'm one of the unfortunates who experienced almost the exact same thing as you.  My first was 10 years ago.  Rather than re-type it all, you can read my posts and the replies:

In short, I had the same issue as you and basically gave up on running.  YEARS later, after participating in boot-camp-style workouts for a year (which did NOT hurt.....ONLY running hurt it), I was able to run almost 3 miles before the groin pain set in.  I think it was from all the lower-body exercises that were constant in boot camp that helped.  Maybe try some intense, varied, lower body conditioning workouts.  It seemed to help me.

Thanks for the replies, esp imgetinold.  I read your other post - seems similar.
SInce my last post I almost gave up hope but I contacted the surgeon again.
Have had bloods done, xray done, MRI and bone scan with SPECT. Tendinosis as would be expected.  Joint apparently looks in order.
But.....................
The range of movement is getting worse, almost pre-op worse.  Raising the knee to get into a 4wd is difficult.  My hip flexors must hate me.  It's like the entire area has siezed up.  Tying shoe laces on the op side is difficult again.  Walking with a limp again.  Can't believe my luck......
Off to the Surgeon and his physio here in Brisbane Aus, in November for the next attempt.
If I was a horse, I'd be shot.
But there's worse things that I could be going through so I digress.
You don't appreciate something until it's gone.  I'd love to run to the end of the street.
