Hi Gav,
I realize that this is way off of your original topic, but I noticed at the bottom of your post that you said that you had an "uncemented ASR". Historically, the ASR has used "hybrid" fixation; uncemented cup, and cemented femoral cap. If you had a totally uncemented ASR, I think that would be big news in the resurfacing world. Could you confirm whether your ASR was uncemented, and if so, any other information on this.

I asked the surgeon if it would be uncemented, and he said yes. I think he meant the cup though. I just asked some of the questions from the list on this side. At that time I didn't know enough about it. So I'm presuming that all cups are uncemented, and caps are cemented?

Hi Gav,

It's amazing how quickly we get to understand about re-surfacing and the different models being used.

My understanding of cups is...ALL cups are press fit, cemented we used early in re-surfacing and they are not to be used because of the mid/long term complications.

I often wonder about the cap being cemented or not, I have a cemented cap but i can see how the cementless would work and which one is best in the long term.

Best wishes

Hi Gav,
You are right about pretty much all cups being uncemented. The vast majority of caps are cemented. Dr Gross in the US developed a cementless cap with Biomet, and has been installing hundreds of these for over two years now. Cormet has a cementless cap option, that is not getting a lot of use. Some people think that many manufacturers will eventually come out with cementless cap options, which is why your post showing a possible cementless ASR caught my attention.
