Unfortunately I can't give credit where credit is due on this.  Sometime in June someone posted about a company that makes special garments for athletes.  These garments are made to provide compression and pockets for ice.

I bought a pair of juggler's pants.  Yesterday, 48 hours after my left hip surgery, I put them on for the first time.  It was a struggle to get them over my left leg because of the swelling.  But once they were on there was relief with the compression.  Then when I inserted the special ice sheets in the pockets the value became immediately apparent.

First I could get the ice exactly where I needed it.  And second the stretchy pockets held the ice in place even as I moved around.

Although these are designed for athlete's and are a bit expensive for just hip surgery, they are unbelievably useful.

You can check them out at 110playharder.com.

My PT would love these, he's always talking about compression.  Although he recommends compression a little farther down the recovery road.  Sort of reminds of the ice-pack vests I've seen for working in severe heat.  I certainly like the idea of keeping the ice on one spot.  I had a hard time with that.  Used towels and small pillows to support floppy bags of ice.
