Wow, John, that sounds great.

I'm just curious about any restrictions or precautions your surgeon had for you.  I felt very similar in terms of what I felt I could do at one week, at ten days, etc.  I asked my surgeon (Dr. Gross) and he reiterated to NOT walk in excess of 1-1.5 miles per day, and no exercise bike until the six week checkup.

Admittedly, he may have a much more conservative rehab, but can you share what your surgeon's protocols were?

Congrats again.

Okay, 6 weeks post op and counting.  Doing better and better each week.  Slowly getting strength back.  Dr. Rector detaches the gluteus muscle on his posterior approach, so working on my glute strength and extension.  I've already got better extension now then I've had in years.  Almost no pain in the hip, but does ache a little now and then still.  Immediately gets better when I ice.  About 95% of the swelling is gone, just a little puffy on the right butt cheek.   :P  Incision looks like a red line is all.

Put in alomst 180 miles on the bike last week, plus three days in the weight room doing all my strengthening exercises they had me doing in PT.  I stopped the PT since I can do it all pretty much at my work in the weight room.  I'm on my feet almost all day coaching swim and doing all my PE classes, so it's unbelievable how quickly this recovery process has been.  People see me and don't believe how fast I've recovered being only 6 weeks out.  Seems being active only accelerates the healing process; I know all the weight bearing accelerates the bone growth and ingrowth.

Anyway, just thought I'd post an update.

John,

Wonderful news.  Sounds like you are a sucess story for Dr Rector's.  My scar is starting to darken up and fade.  I am working on getting my glutes stronger and my core, which is a challenge, because I am lazy.   :o
Happy to hear that you biked that distance, that is outstanding.  I biked from Aspen to Glenwood when I was 6 months post op and then also swam a mile, there are major breakthoughs with this surgery.  Happy to hear that you are doing well.
Curious where do you live?

7 Weeks post op and continuing to improve.  Can't believe how fast it all happens.  Got in 180 miles on the bike this week, did hill repeats twice this week, 10 times each day (short hill 1:30 effort).  Stood up the whole time to get my glutes to fire.  Today, rode with my daughter on the Time Trial bikes.  She was doing 3 mile intervals.  So, I followed along.  On the first one I was able to hold 30-31 mph. So, feel like my strength is coming back slowly.  Dr. Rector said I should be ready to race by June, so far it's looking good.  Got a massage today too, that really helped.  Dr. Rector is amazing.

8 weeks post op.  Some big break throughs this week.  One, did two 60 mile rides with hill repeats for the hard part.  Tues. the hill repeats were very slow.  Reality slap in the face.  But, Thur. did the same hill repeats and dropped almost a minute off each one from Tuesdays efforts; only 30 seconds off best time ever.  Also, last Sunday, hiked in to an area to scout for turkeys and it was pretty uncomfortable on the uneven terrain and hip felt very weak.  Today hiked in the same area to hunt for turkeys and the hip felt almost normal.  Not once did I notice it.  So, it continues to get better.

Reading stories like this is so helpful in understanding the recovery process and so encouraging. I will admit I was taken back by how sore and weak I was right after surgery. I had no reference, nothing to compare to - I haven't been in a hospital since I was born. I SO want to ride my bike again and reading your progress puts a smile on my face. I'd like to think I've learned a few things over the years about how hard I can push myself and I hope I can strike the right balance here.

Okay, 9 weeks out.  Keeps getting better on the operated side.  Tuesday, did a 20 time trial on the TT bike, kept H.R. at threshold the whole time.  Averaged just over 25, not fast, but a good effort.  Hip hurt a little at the end, but immediatly stopped after my warm down.  I still iced when I got home.  Wed, did a 70 mile ride.  Nothing hard, just nice steady tempo.  Today, went with my daughter and did 1/2 mi. hill repeats.  These were all way over threshold.  Never once did I feel my hip.  So, recovery is going great.  Hope to be racing by June.  We'll see if Dr. Rector gives me the okay.

John,

I expect when it's time for your three month check up with Dr. Rector that you will just ride your bike to and from Boulder. Shouldn't take you more than a couple of days at the rate you are recovering. It would be a nice tribute to Dr. Rector.

Great work John, you are really kicking it on your recovery.  You'll not only be racing but racing well in June!

I don't know about that Woodstock.  Major reality check today.  Did a 50 mile ride with 5,200 ft of climbing (3 mile hill repeats).  First one was okay, but then the rest of them the piano fell out of the sky.  I tried the Jens Voigt "shut up legs"  approach, but it didn't work.

We all have bad days and we had them before we had hip problems too.  You're doing great, keep up the good work!

11 weeks out from surgery and things are going AWESOME!!!  1)  Training is going great.  Got in my first 300 mile week since surgey.  Did hill repeats twice this past week.  And last Sat. got in 85.  One day did 32 with a 15 mile time trial in 32:04.  I was very happy with that.  28 mph ave.  Used the TT bike with fast helmet and skin suit, but no fast wheels.  I got a new bike yesterday, a Cannondale EVO.  So, motivation just went up a notch.  Going to go watch my 14 yr. old daughter do a Sprint Tri tomorrow.  So, it will be fun for people to see me out riding on the course and say, "Hey, didn't you just have hip surgery?"   LOL

Just got off the phone with a good friend of mine, mulitple national champion cyclist.  He's in his 60's now.  Crashed Wed and broke his hip.  They did surgery today and decided to give him a new total hip.  Talked with him on the phone tonight, but docs were in the room, so gotta call back tomorrow and compare notes with him and see how he's doing.  They said he had arthritis so bad they just decided to replace the hip as well.  Too bad he couldn't have gotten a resurfaced hip.

John - When did you start riding your road bike, as opposed to the stationary bike? Do you feel significant strength differences between your legs? Any stiffness in the operated hip after a long ride?

At 3.5 weeks out I've been on the stationary bike for about a week and a half. I've pushed the resistance up to about 60% of where I was pre-surgery, but I'm still taking it pretty easy. And I'm dying to get back on my road bike!
RBHR Dr. Callander 3/27/12

johnd_emd

Stephen,

I got on the stationary bike at 2 weeks to the day.  Very little resistance.  I rode :30 first day.  The first week I started, I did that the first day, then the next day rode 1hr.  Again, very little resistance.  I was also walking during that time too every day.  Then a day after that I rode the MTB on some farm roads with out being clipped in, for an hour.  Very small gears.  Just ROM.  Did that a couple days for 1hr each time.  Third week, kept it at an hour on the stationary bike, kept walking, and started Phy. Therapy.  Just kept bumping it up after that.  Still though, focused on just spinning and not on increasing the resistance that fast.  I felt I was still in healing mode, I didn't want to have a "training" mentality.  Now that I'm 11 weeks, I'm full on training mentality now.  Lots of Ice during the first 2-6 weeks after workouts.  Don't much ice any more, unless it's sore.

Also, I have no stiffness in my hip after rides.  My back get's pretty stiff, LOL.  But my surgical hip is great.  I did have some stiffness after rides the first few weeks.  But, nothing that noteworthy.  My right hip still isn't as strong as my left leg, but almost!!
