Well,

May 15 did my first race a little over 3 mo. post op.  Was planning on doing the 35+ 1,2's and the Pro 1,2's race, but only did the 35+ race.  It was a brisk pace, 27 mph average, with fast laps at 33-34mph.  I finished with the lead group and got 14th.  Was so tired afterwards I bailed on the Pro 1,2 race.  (Found out two days later I have mono  :(   Oh well, I was still so excited that I didn't even notice my right hip.  Although I can't say I didn't think about it.  All the turns were right hand. LOL   Well, I know it will only keep getting better.  Amazing the technology now days for the hip resurfacing.

Very pleased to hear your results, but mono - who have you been kissing?

Are you doing any weight exercises for legs? Just curious as I have been doing 4 sets of 15 deep knee bends and 4 sets of 15 light leg presses every other day. I can't honestly tell any difference in strength from one leg to the other, although the little twinges you get on a long steep climb start in the non operated leg first. Go figure...

That's awesome John!  Great race only 3 months out!  I road my road bike for the first time outdoors today. Rode maybe 6 miles at who knows what pace with platform pedals and a 27 on the rear to get over a couple hills.  I was so happy though pedaling down the road! I was actually able to ride on the hoods too!  Have not touched that area comfortably for almost two years!  Hope to be remotely close to what you're doing at three months!
Congrats again

Stephen, yes I did weights and deep knee lunges for a number of weeks starting at about 3-4 weeks out.  I'm not lifting at all now since I'm riding 300+ miles a week.  That would break me down too much.  I did a 70 mile ride today, all on the TT bike.  Did the first 25 miles with my daughter.  She did 3 x 4 mile intervals.  She's getting ready for the State TT championships.  Then I did another 45, most of it around 25 mph on my TT bike.  Never felt the hip, but my right buttocks got a little sore.  LOL

Rob, That's great great you're out there riding.  I firmly believe the more active, to a point, that you are post op the better your recovery and results will be.  I'm sure you'll be hammering out the miles in a few months.

So excited to hear the amount of miles you're doing per week! I used to commute and do just a bit less than that per week and haven't been able to since 2009-2010.  I was NEVER a good crit racer and was always just happy to finish in the field. Road racing was my thing.  I can't wait to get to the start line next year! Hopefully not get dropped  ;D. Keep racing and updating so it will motivate me and others who can't wait to join you!

Yeah, I'm not much of a crit guy either.  But, funny thing is, last year my best results were in crits.  I do like road races though.  I'm sure you'll be doing great in a couple months.  Just keep active, get on the bike and spin as much as possible, and be smart.  Use lots of ice.  I'm dying to hear how you do.

300 miles a week is a lot of miles but it really points out just how beneficial this surgery is to really active people. Going from not being able to do anything to being able to do everything again is really amazing. I'd write more but I have to go get the bikes ready for today's ride!

Got about a 12 mile ride in today and actually used the drops!  This is getting better and better! Cannot wait until I can do a group ride again.......and not get popped.

Rob, great job.  I don't know about the group ride?????   I started riding pretty soon after surgery, but I didn't even think of a group ride for several months.  Chances of going down go way up in a "group ride".  Just a thought.

I second that one John about the "group ride".
I only ride with the few friends I know who can ride and I know their quirks...

That's great advice...wasn't really thinking that through. Every time I've gone down its either been with a group or in a peloton.  Thanks guys.  I do have a question.  When did you start using your clip less pedals again? I'm still using platform pedals and it seems more dangerous than the clip less.
Thanks

I started using clips right away, but I was on the stationary bike for a couple weeks before riding the road bike.  I road my MTB a few times with platform pedals, then just went back to my road bike and my look pedals.  I loosened the tension a little to make it easier to get in and out of them.

Raced Monday, won the second prime ($100), team mate won the race.  80+ in the field.  Not bad for 3 1/2 months out.  I'm the one on the left of the picture in the blue and black kit with Ritchie on the shoulders; on the black Cannondale.

I'm really impressed. That's how this whole deal is supposed to go - right back at 'em!

That's right Stephen.  It all starts with picking a good device to use, then picking a very good surgeon with a good track record to put it in.  I know we all hope to get back to where we were pre-op.  At least, that's my goal.  I can't wish enough good luck to all those who have their hips resurfaced!!!

Go with clipless from the start Joe.  You are not going to dislocate anything or cause damage by clipping out.  Loosen the tension for the first few rides to put you at ease.

Nice race John!

Thanks David and John! Can't wait to put my pedals back on!  Today was my last ride with the platforms!,yippee!  Nice race John, looks like the field was spread out pretty good! Congrats on winning the prime and your teammate taking 1st!  Hope you all split the $$$$!  :). Keep filling us in....very inspiring!

Well, just an update.  I'm almost 6 months out now.  I've been pounding out the miles on the bike.  Averaging over 300 miles a week 7 of the last 8 weeks.  Hips holding up good.  State Road Race Championships coming up, so I'll do that and see how it fairs.  Had a funny experience a couple weeks ago.  We were playing "Long Base" (Wiffle ball with one base to run to and back) and it was on the beach in the sand.  I had no control over my hip/leg when I was running.  My leg felt like it had a mind of it's own.  My brain had no idea what direction it was going, turning, pushing, etc.  It was the weirdest sensation.  My wife, who's an Occupational Therapist, told me that it's because all the nerve endings (propriorecptors) in the acetabular cup and on the femoral head are no longer there, so my proprioreception (awareness of what my limb/body are doing in space) isn't the same now.  She say's it will come back, but will take time.  But, it was almost comical trying to run after a ball in the sand and play.  I felt like such a spazz  LOL

I have a similar problem, normally occurs after a couple bottles of red wine. Are sure you hadn't been over indulging.LOL
