Today is my three year anniversary. Much fear of a step into the unknown before the operation, but information and support from this community (thank you Pat) helped me get through it.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it was hard when you see negative news that is so negative about resurfacing (the negative news stories I read gave me the impression it simply was snake medicine and bull, these success stories must be fake news!). But this site, and the good fortune that my doctor had gone bilateral with Mr McMinn, and my local surgeon even suggested it ... meant I made the right choice.

I went to see Mr McMinn, I was having disrupted sleep, my golf was sublime or ridiculous due to pain the day after playing so I started to take co-codamol to play, and to sleep, and I couldn't really run or play tennis with my daughter (still can't, but it's because she's too good for me!). And my knee was playing up when I rowed on my erg due to twisting to accommodate my hip pain.

So I had it done. My 5 night stay in hospital was a bit rough. I think I overdid the morphine and was sick, and terribly constipated. But it quickly got better. Six weeks later, having done exercises and walking carefully, I got swimming. At about 12-14 weeks played golf pain free! The six weeks goes slow, worry that every twinge was it failing, and hoping to be pain free soonest like a miracle.

One year later I won our club open championship with a gross 4 under par. My best ever.

Here three years later I am playing golf, rowing, running and basically doing as I please. Sleeping fine too.

I have played golf (practise or play) 9 times in the past two weeks, whilst also running and walking the dog. My hip is solid as a rock and I love it. My left knee ain't perfect but getting stronger. My golf is best ever.

I love my hip and so very happy I had the operation. Thanks to all fellow hippies for support! And, to prospective hippies, I say if you see one of the recognised resurfacing surgeons and they say you're a candidate then go for it. There are no guarantees but statistically you should be fine. And be patient: don't expect a two week miracle. But a 6 month miracle feels just as good when you get there :)

Awesome update Matt. It's amazing how active we can get once our hip(s) are repaired. Before my surgeries, I tried to stay active, but when you look back, you notice you're simply not doing all the same activities you used to enjoy.

And winning golf tournaments? Nice!
