Biomet vs BHR

41 yo male looking at unilateral Hip resurfacing for osteoarthritis.
Is there a consensus on which is better, uncemented Biomet vs cemented BHR, particularly as it relates to impact sports and heavy lifting?

     I had the same question.  I just had the Biomet implant for my left hip with Dr. Gross 4 weeks ago.  I think the fundamental difference is that the thinking behind the Biomet cementless is that it removes that potential point of failure (because it grafts into the bone) as opposed to the cemented BHR where the cement could eventually fail/wear out/whatever.  Having said that, I think the BHR has excellent results and almost no cases of the cement failing or being a problem.  I went with the Biomet because I felt strongly that the surgeon was the primary factor in achieving the best results and I have a lot of faith in Dr. Gross based on his performance numbers and having spent a lot of time discussing this with him over the past few years.  I did ask him at one point if he would implant the BHR - if that was an option - but it is not with Dr. Gross. I believe he is the inventor of the Biomet and is definitely an investigator for it.  Again, the other HR specialists mentioned on this site are also excellent and I know several of them use the BHR.  I have a pretty strong feeling that both are excellent devices and that we're probably splitting hairs (as long as you have one of the specialist surgeons highlighted on this site do the surgery).

Thanks for sharing your experience. From what I’ve read, He does appear to be one of the worlds best. I look forward to talking with him. I did get to review Dr. Gross’ 2017 publication reporting his 12 year results with the cementless system, and the Kaplan-Meier implant survival curves appear essentially the same as McMinns 1st 12 years of the 20 total year series. So that suggests to me that the implant survival is similar at least out to the mid term. I guess the theoretical appeal of a cementless system is for long term durability. I wonder at how many years corrosion of the material may be a concern, in the event there’s no other cause for revision. But I believe there aren’t any long term studies beyond 20 years on any of these as yet. So probably no one knows for sure. Do you happen to know if anyone else using the Biomet cementless system as well?

Yes, I had/have the same concerns about implant survivability.  I believe most of Dr. Gross' patients are biomet cementless.  Again if you read John C's post to me, he got one 10 years ago and another just 6 months ago on the opposite hip because he was so happy with how well the first one has served him.
