I had hip resurfacing surgery by Dr. Pritchett in Seattle on Nov. 17 of last year.  In the last couple of months, I've noticed fluctuant swelling about the size of a water balloon on the side of my hip, just lateral to my greater trochanter.  Went to Seattle to have him evaluate it and he aspirated close to 100cc of serosanguinous fluid off the hip.  It returned within a week and is slightly larger and more painful than before.  Cultures came back negative.  He doesn't seem too concerned about the seroma and says it will resolve on it's own, but i'm very concerned.  I've stopped cycling and doing PT completely and am resting the hip.  Does anybody have any experience with a seroma and what was the end result.  Thanks, Steve

Hi SteveDDS,

If you type "seroma" into the search field you will get a few results you can read.

In my case I had a small seroma [little larger than half a golf ball] that appeared over night.  That really had me worried and I was able to get a doctor to have a look at it.  For my situation the doctor recommended that I wear compression shorts and my seroma went away within a week. Was amazed that the seroma subsided so quickly ... cannot say for sure that it was the compression shorts but it may be worth a try.

Thanks for the advice, I will give this a try.

Dr. Pritchett is one of the best, from most accounts.  If he's not worried, I wouldn't be either.  Good luck.  Update us when you can.
