First time user. I am currently 6 1/2 months post op from Right BHR and still noticing incisional discomfort and lateral thigh pain. Unsure what the 'normal' is at this stage in the healing process. I have been doing PT, walking, bike rides, weight training and hiking but notice soreness afterwards. Also noticing bilateral buttocks pain just with normal activities and walking as well as operative side knee discomfort. Anyone with similar issues and how long did it take to resolve? Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi

I wonder, was your gait/ posture quite bad for a long period before the Op. if so it might just be your body getting used to you walking / operating biomechanically in a normal way again.

I had a pain in my unoperated hip for months after, which went eventually. I think it was because my gait had changed massively.

I am 13 months post op and still get the odd discomfort (if you can call it that, it is more of a ‘0.1’ on the pain scale compared to the arthritis!) on the scar. But its more like an itch when it does occur (which is less and less).

My leg was really quite wasted when I went under the knife so has taken alot of effort to get it back in shape. And I have taken it steady. Hope your pains fade with time 😀

I'm not sure what the range of normal is for incisional discomfort/pain. In my late teens I had arthroscopic surgery on my right knee. Those incisions were sensitive for eons, probably for at least a year. This faded with time, but it was much longer than I was led to believe it would be and longer than what others told me they experienced. With both my right and left hip resurfacings it also took a very long time for the incisions to feel nothing. Again, it faded over a very long time, but just over two years out I would say it's uncomfortable (but not a big deal) when a cats walks on my left hip incision if I'm laying on my right side. If I'm laying on my left side and a cat walks on my right hip (7 years out?) there is no discomfort at all. With both it was months before I could comfortably roll onto my side, yet I've seen others on this forum mention sleeping on their sides after several weeks. I sleep on my back, so not an issue for me. Yet, in all of these cases the joint itself was fully functioning and better than ever. In my case I've concluded that for whatever reason incision pain heals slowly for me. Don't know why. You may be like me. I don't know how common this is, or what's considered a normal time frame for this.

As for some of your muscle soreness, it sounds to me like you're able to do a lot. Remember, a lot of the healing is internal, and it can take up to a year or more. Your body is no doubt still on its healing journey. I wouldn't worry too much about the soreness. It may be your body's way of telling you to take it a little easier as you heal. If you're really concerned you can always bring this up with your surgeon, or even your PT.

I am not too overly concerned, just unsure why my butt muscles are so sore, operative side more so then other. ALso the discomfort in in my knee. Read about the Piriformis muscle being tight, ITB issues or gluteal muscles not firing and wasnt sure how to go about it
