I had a right BHR to MOM THR on December 20, 2010 (BHR was 1/13/2009). The cause of the failure is not known yet and may never be, but Osteonecrosis (bone death) occured, my Dr. is sending the component to England for futher review. I did have a bicycle crash on the right side in September 2010 but bone shrinkge was present in xrays prior to that. I did get a second opinion from Dr. Gross prior to surgery and it concured with my DR. They were able to use the acetabular component so only the femoral component was replaced. I am 55 years old and very fit and active. I am recovering well after the surgery and feel the surgery was less traumatic that the original surgery because the original socket was saved and time in surgery was much less. I have kept a daily diary of my recovery since the BHR and would highly suggest this to everyone it allows you to look back and see how your recovery is going and helps if you do have problems.

Thus far this hip feels like the resurfaced hip, post surgery pain was a little more, and more of a deep bone pain than before but not really too bad. I feel stronger this time I think due to less muscle cutting being involved, I have the same PT as before and she can tell a big difference in recovery this time. Somewhere around 4% of BHR's face failures, In my case the revision wasn't that bad. I hope this post will help anyone else facing a revision.

Hi

I am glad to hear your recovery is going fairly well.  I appreciate you taking time to post your thoughts.  I would be happy to post your complete diary on the THR website  http://www.hipsforyou.com/hipstories.php and even here under the section where revisions stories appear. http://www.surfacehippy.info/hipresurfacingproblems.php Just send it to me when you are ready.  You can also add updates in the future.

Please stay in touch and I hope your recovery goes by quickly.  A MOM THR is not a bad solution and usually has no more restrictions than a hip resurfacing - which are usually none.

Good Luck.
