Getting a thr from Dr Klug 10-4-13.  I have mixed emotions but for the most part am looking forward to it. On the bad days I'm ready to do it asap, but I still have good days, and on those days I begin to 2nd guess myself, it's not that bad is it? I mean it gets sore and swolen on the bad days, and it clicks and knocks daily, good or bad day, but I'm still doing what I want to do, are my expectations too high ? What if the thr isn't any better ? What a colossal mistake that would be right ? Thats probably my biggest fear, to have the doctor say gee it all looked fine I didn't see any signs of anything wrong , and then have the same symptoms or worse with the thr. Anyway overall the last 5 years have been pretty good, I raced and even won some motocross races, put hundreds of miles on my bicycle, hiked all over Yosemite, spent a week on the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier (My wife and I did a "Tiger cruise" from Hawaii to San Diego with my daughter) went to DC and saw the Smithsonian(s), got 3rd overall in a bodysurfing contest, plus worked the whole time and did things I would have never been able to do before surgery. So all in all it's been a helluva run, but the symptoms continue to increase. I sometimes wonder if I should wait for complete catastrophic failure and then revise ? Or am I being smart because who knows what kind of tissue damage is being done, my synovial fluid came back dark and "abnormal" over 2 years ago, I'm sure it hasn't "fixed itself" since then. 
Anyway I'll stop rambling :), The date is set and I will be conducting a "Pepsi challenge" so to speak. BHR resurfacing vs a Zimmer fit more ceramic on plastic thr (That's what Dr Klug recommends) What I would REALLY like to try is BHR INSTALLED PERFECTLY, because when this thing was working good around 2-3 years out, it was perfect, no pain, no clicking or knocking and felt solid as a rock. I was 110% sold and one happy camper, now not so much. So if you're a newbie reading this (I'm gonna sound like a broken record here) make sure you go to a resurface specialist, and grill him om how he sets the angles etc. My 65 degree cup was awesome while it lasted, but I was hoping for more than 5 years. Anyway thats it, hope you all are doing well and wish everyone the rest of luck !  8)   

I do understand how you're feeling - if we're truthful we all think we may have to make the same decision as you one day but hope that we don't.

I'm happy for you that you have a surgery date with your chosen surgeon.

It wasn't your fault the BHR wasn't fitted correctly and, for a long time, you've battled valiantly since unwanted symptoms developed.

You're always thoughtful too to remind potential hippies to choose their surgeon wisely.

Good people on here have been fitted with a THR and are doing tremendously.

Two of my nearest neighbours have been fitted with THR's recently and are doing perfectly - one of whom is a 50 year old very active farmer who had both hips done (not at the same time).

Bill, you are one great hippy.

There's no doubt that it sucks to have to revise, and the angle is far off. You have enjoyed this, but there is nothing that says you won't enjoy the THR.

I also wish they had put in the BHR right, but now you've got a good ways forward. Hopefully it serves you well and you've got a long long stretch with it doing what you want.

I think that you are on the right track. You got some good years out of your BHR, but with that 65 degree angle and the symptoms you have been dealing with, I agree that it is time to stop any concerns about soft tissue damage, and get a nice shiny new joint put in properly. Dr. Klug has a great reputation, so I am sure that you will come out in great shape.
Stay in touch, because we all want to hear you add to that long list of things you have accomplished with replaced hips.

Thanks for the nice thoughts and encouragement !  I also know a few people with thrs who are doing great. It will be nice to put in the pt and actually make progress.  Next decision will be drive for 8-10 hours each way or fly and rent a car ? 

One "might" feel more comfortable in a car with a kind companion doing the driving and nurturing, but that seems a long trip if you can't lie down or recline. Good luck with your decisions, home prep and planning. I think the weeks of anticipation for surgery can sometimes be difficult, so I wish you peace, comfort and all possible success.

Bill, we have had some fun surf sessions when we were first rehabbing and I think when you get all fixed up by Dr. Klug there will be a lot better sessions to come. He is a great doc from all I have read about him and his patients. You are doing the right thing and the future should be way better, besides the last time I came down there to see you, you could barely walk that day. So go get fixed up and lets go surf.

ps. By the way we drove up here in our Dodge truck, now known as the "Rambulance" Haha. The back seat is now a bed thanks to every sleeping bag and blanket we own stuffed back there, plus a half chord of firewood in the bed to smooth out the ride. I'll post some progress reports. And you newbies reading this GO TO A RE-SURFACE SPECIALIST!!!!  Don't F around with someone who's done less than 500, unless you want to re-do it in a few years. If you don't mind that then go be part of someone's learning curve, have at it. B.I.L.L. out !!

The entire thing just stinks. I have dreams that the same thing happens to me. As active as you are, I feel you are making the correct decision to go ahead with it now. At least the HR spared some femoral bone for 5 years and there' s something to be said for that.
I'm sure you' ve read the other posts here from hippies who went through the same thing. Seems most all of them found relief with the thr.

I am sorry that I missed your post.  I was away fishing in Lake Erie for a few days.

I wish you the very best of luck and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  It does seem to be a good idea to get the revision and get back to an active life without worries and problems.

7 month update. New one is doing well, rom is still improving and like the first one, constant pt and stretching seem to be the ticket. If I stop stretching and walking, exercising etc it starts to bother me after a few weeks. I discovered this the hard way, was feeling great and making progress for the first few months (when I was walking, exercising, and resting daily) Then I went back to work full time, got out of the habit, put a few pounds back on and presto, hip started buggin me, 2-3 weeks of daily walking and stretching and it starts to feel better. I still have a little discomfort if I sit for hours at a time, and the front of my thigh has some numbness and pins and needle sensations, but there is no knocking or clicking/clunking etc. It feels butter smooth and any discomfort I do get is in the surrounding muscles, the "Joint" area feels fine. Anyway life is good, we've been doing some 4-5 mile hikes (with some steep climbs) riding my bicycle, started surfing again and working full time. Only real change is I don't lift anything over 50-75 pounds (unless I have to, and then I use mostly the good side) and I really miss riding my dirtbike. Dr Klug said wait a year before you do anything really dumb like motocross, and Mrs Some Dude is holding me too it  ;D  Hope everyone is doing well !
