How soon to do calisthenics

How soon after surgery did you get back into some sort of calisthenics exercise with some range of motion?  Did anyone try yoga?  I'm in for resurfacing next week with Dr. Brooks.  His instructions are no weights for 12 months, but I'm hoping calisthenics would be OK (walking lunges, body weight squats, etc..) and possibly yoga to try to get some range of motion back.

Hi, Matt!  Welcome!  I got back to my morning light yoga routine after completing Dr. Gross’s 6 week PhaseII exercises at around 10 weeks, interspersing some of the exercises he gave me like leg lifts and clamshells.  No heavy extreme poses until 6 months.  Possibility of femoral neck fracture is the biggest worry until about 6 months, plus the muscles and connective tissue that had to be repaired and reattached to bone need time to heal.  He doesn’t recommend heavy exercise for the first 6 months, but light stuff including light stretching, gym workouts and LOTS of walking are highly encouraged after 6 weeks, based on how well you are healing.  Did Dr. Brooks say anything about exceeding 90 degrees on your hip?

Thanks for the reply!  If I remember correctly, there were no range of motion limitations, and looking at the post-op instruction sheet I don't see anything on there about range of motion either.  That said, I believe Dr. Brooks uses the anterior approach, which I believe reduces chances of dislocation relative to other approaches because they don't have to cut or detach as much, so maybe this is the reason for no ROM limit.  I will definitely double check with him though.

The leg on my bad side is now visibly smaller than my other leg, from not being able to use the full range of motion for so long, so I'm really excited to be able to get this leg going again ASAP, but at the same time not screw things up for the long term.

Dr. Gross uses posterior approach with no restrictions after 6 months.  Until 6 weeks, no bending past 90 degrees at the hip, then after 6 weeks, no extreme flexion until 6 months.  I’m 3 months post-op and can get my knee to my nose with no problems.  No worries about dislocation, it’s just the tissues mending until 6 months.  I had my other hip done in January of ‘21.  No issues at all with that one.

All the best on your surgery!  Hope you’ll keep us updated and looking forward to reading about your progress.
