Hi all,

I'm a 41 year old male that is a few months away from my first BHR on my right side. I say first as it seems pretty likely I will also have to have the left done at some point.

The issues with my hips pretty much all stem from playing Basketball from a very young age.
I'm now a keen golfer rather than a hooper and most of my pain from my hips seem to radiate into my groin more than anything, I do get pins and needles in my right foot a bit and a fair bit of aches but I'm really more frustrated with the groin issues.

The combination restricts me from being as active as I like and I have to rest a fair bit, especially from one golf day to another. I just couldn't play two days in a row.

I have done a bit of trawling through this forum regarding groins and there were a few red flags for me, most notable being people saying they had groin pain after surgery.

Really want to make the right call on it.

Can I ask those that have had surgery -

Was groin pain prior to BHR a common issue for you?
and if so did the operation help alleviate it?

Yes and yes

My primary symptom pre-surgery was also groin pain (also back a lot), at 35 years. The surgery did not fix it as I now have impingement (metal on bone). Pain is around the same as before, ROM changed - a lot more rotation but very little flexion. I talked to a few people with similar issues post resurfacing... so it happens sometimes.

I did the surgery (16 months ago) to get back to the sports I loved which did not work out at all. If I would have to decide again for the other side, I would only do the surgery if I have too much pain to enjoy daily life.

Edit: Here is a link to a study on persistent groin pain after resurfacing: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2807018/. Since these are the docs' self-reported data, 18% is likely a lower bound for the population incidence.

I am sorry about your post op problems.  I hope you find a solution.

This is not normally a problem with most patients.

Please note - the study you share is 13 years old from one surgeon with 116 patients.  I find it interesting that this was not a high volume surgeon and that many of his patients had problems.  Very unusual.Please keep in mind that the very experienced surgeons have done 5000, 6000 or more hip resufacings and have excellent outcomes.


I do hope you find a solution, but I want people to realize that your outcome is not the norm and this study you quote is very old and for a very small number of patients who had so many problems.  That is the reason many less experienced surgeons no longer do hip resurfacing.  It is a very difficult surgery and component placement must be exact.  Always a good reason to use a very experienced surgeon.

Yes I had groin pain before surgery, especially my first one 12 years ago.  I did have groin pain for months after surgery but it went away fairly quickly once it started to subside.  I definitely recommend a good physical therapist with experience with hip replacement, even better partial hip.

I am now a little over 8 months post op with the right hip and the groin pain went away even more quickly this time.  I definitely made a point of pushing my exercise and stretching routine.

I agree with Pat, the people that I talk with have experiences like me.

Yes, lots of groin pain before surgery. I had hip dysplasia, and it turns out groin pain is a very common symptom of dysplasia. Not that I had any idea of that before my hip really deteriorated. Since resurfacing there has been absolutely zero groin pain whatsover.
