HnH, how's it going?  I haven't seen you around here for a while. How is you second recovery going? I'm running in my same old New Balance trail shoes from before the surgery.  Please tell me more about Hoka shoes.

I think it's the picture of the runner at the top of every page on this site that makes us recovering runners crazy and impatient.  ;)

I am not disagreeing with any of the advocates for patience, but honestly, the ONLY reason I got the resurfacing was so I could run again, and I bet I speak for many hippy runners.

Update:  After a workout at my Dad's clubhouse (over Thanksgiving), I attempted a run back to his house.  I made it 1/2 mile before the telltale soreness in the groin, which made me limp for a few steps.  But, that is 5x better than last time.

Four days later, I managed 1 mile on the treadmill before it set it, and that was even a lot less ache than before.  Granted, I was only running at 6.0 MPH on the treadmill (9.65 KPH for those across the pond).  I think that may be the key to working back in.  I typically run (used to run?) at about an 8:00 mile pace (7.5 MPH -- 12 KPH).

And I DO think I'm going to try the HOKA shoes.  That doesn't mean I have to start smoking a HOOKAH, does it?

I waited a full year before I started to run, I look for soft ground - grass or path at nature center.  I have added a jump rope to my workouts - strength the calf and lower ligaments.  I also have added balancing on one foot on a half round BOSU exercise ball to strengthen the ankle.

After my hip I have found my lower back does not hurt now when I run.  I am going 2 miles max and I stop and walk when every I feel something.  Probably running 1 a week as I fit it in with everything else.

Having said all that I still hate running!

I said it before - that telltale soreness in the groin IS SCAR TISSUE.  It is not the implant. It is not runnnig fast ot slow.  Get thee to an ART practiioner or deep tissue massage therapist and get that scar tissue broken up.  You dont need to be a victim.

You seem pretty convinced.  Therefore, I will test your theory and report back.  And, I will curse you while the therapist performs the torture....

Alright......you HOKA wearers.

I tried on one at a shoe store, and....yes.....they feel unbelievable.  Good enough even to get past the "orthopedic shoe" look.

Can anyone articulate the real differences between the models?  I do mostly road running, and some trail running.  I would exclusively run trails if it were more convenient.  As a result, it seems I should get the "Bondi B" version.  However, there is limited selection of colors, etc., and I like the looks of the Stinson Evo better.  Is there really that much difference?

Thanks,

Andy

BTW.....I did go to a massage therapist yesterday, and she worked me over.  Now, on Thanksgiving day I injured my rhomboid muscle playing tennis (too many backhands after not playing for six weeks), so she spent 1/2 the time on that.  However, as she was working on me, she talked about the psoas muscle, and where it attaches and all that.  It seems clear that my pain in coming from that, which Dr. Gross's literature specifically points out as a common issue.

So, I think I will be aggressively working on the psoas muscle.  AND getting the HOKA ONE ONE's.

I bought the Stinson Evo's and they work great.  I started running one year after surgery, to be conservative.  I'm going slow- so far only 1 mile at a time, and that is following my 15 mile bike ride.  I am only able to ride outside once a week now (weather / daylight / work schedule- upstate NY), so I've only run (4) 1-mile runs, and I have had no soreness at all following each "brick".  I supplement with swimming (3) 1-mile swims per week and I'm 110K into the 200K Concept 2 rower holiday challenge, from Thanksgiving until Christmas.

These running shoes will allow me to gradually prepare for a few sprint triathlons this coming summer.  I am moving ahead with caution on the running and plan to go out to a 2-mile run next weekend.

David will hate me for saying this but the Hoka shoes are the best thing to happen to my legs since my surgery.  I don't know the difference in the models but I do know that they all fit a little differently.  There's quite a few threads about them on Slowtwitch.com.  You could search there or even post a question.  They do have a Stinson Tarmac now for road runners.  Mine are now three month old and feel just like new.  My wife and I were just on vacation and she picked up a pair of Bondi B's.  Her opinion after here first run; ''These would be great for Boston Marathon''

To paraphrase Charlton Heston, ''they are going to pry these shoes off of my cold dead feet''!

Two things.  First, I went back to my old house in Ohio and ran, with a friend, the 4 mile trail through the woods that was right behind my house.  I ran probably 1 mile, then walk/ran the rest.  Probably ran a total of 2 miles....farther than I've ever gone.

My operated hip was sore for four days.  I was really worried, but it resolved, and I'm back to normal.

I picked up my HOKA Bondi B's  yesterday, and did a short treadmill run.  I did intervals of walk 1 min. at 3.5 MPH, and run one minute at 6.5 MPH.  At 0.8 miles I felt the first hint of soreness, so I stopped and finished on the stationary bike.

I know that there's just this one muscle in there that isn't doing its thing......I just don't know how to fix it.  I go back to Dr. Gross for my one year in about 3-4 weeks, so I'll check then.  If I never get back to running, I'm still really glad I had it done.  I just hope that I can.

The weird thing is, today I did the "Insanity Asylum Game Day" workout, which is WAY more intense than a run - for 60 minutes - no problem.  Sheesh!

I'll stick to the intervals, and try to go just a little further each day.  Hopefully the HOKA's will show their merit.  For $160, they better!

@Imgetinold I know this is an old post but was looking for advice on jump rope and I saw all the running stuff. I have felt some mild groin stuff when I have tried jogging. This thing, which was a recommendation from my ART provider works amazing. It is pricey but worth it to run! https://shop.alethahealth.com/products/mark
