Orthopedic Product News interview Derek McMinn and Ronan Treacy of the UK about the current state and future state of hip resurfacing and devices.
… Ronan Treacy: so Catherine kindly demonstrated the results for the BHR. She looked at the results for patients <=50 years of age with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis, the number of BHR’s in her data set was 4,056 implants. When she looked at the male and female results in isolation, she reported 3,187 male patients with a Kaplan–Meier survivorship of 96.2 per cent to 20.1 years. In female patients the numbers were lower, at 869 implants who demonstrated an 86.8 per cent Kaplan–Meier survivorship at 19.5 years. We remain encouraged by the performance of … Read the rest

The continuing controversy – Thomas P. Gross MD. 7/4/2015
Young women who desire a more functional hip replacement were recently dealt a large blow when the smaller sizes of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) device were withdrawn from the market by Smith Nephew Richards because the 10-year revision rate for women was higher than for men in most large registry analyses. … Read the rest
Dr. Pritchett Discusses Hip Resurfacing and Follow Up of 270 Patients
Published on Aug 7, 2018
James Pritchett MD discusses the preference his patients have for hip resurfacing compared to hip replacement. No metal on metal implants were included and the follow-up averaged 11 years and up to 26 years. A polyethylene acetabular component with a ceramic or ceramic coated femoral implant was used. 270 patients. This was a statistically valid independent, blinded, paired bilateral study. More than 85% of patients with a well functioning hip replacement preferred their hip resurfacing side because of better function, feel and performance. The risks and survivorship of hip resurfacing compared to hip replacement was also better in the hand of Dr. Pritchett with a long term failure rate of less than 3.5%. The patients average age was 48 and … Read the rest

Spectrum Health in Michigan Offers Hip Resurfacing
April 5, 2018
Spectrum Health along with Orthopedic Associates of Grand Rapids physician Thomas Malvitz, M.D., are among the first in Michigan to offer an alternative to hip replacement. Birmingham Hip ResurfacingTM (BHR) is offered. Instead of a total hip replacement, hip resurfacing simply shaves and caps a few centimeters of bone within the joint.
“Hip resurfacing may be an ideal alternative for younger, active patients,” said Thomas Malvitz, M.D., Orthopedic Department chairman, Spectrum Health Grand Rapids and physician with Orthopedic Associates of Grand Rapids. “The procedure enables patients to be free from pain but not as limited in their mobility and activity level as a conventional hip replacement.”
The bone-conserving approach of the BHR preserves more of the patient’s natural bone structure and … Read the rest

A Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Solution for Young, Active Patients with Hip Arthritis in Ontario
Toronto is North America’s 4th largest city and has the fastest growing population in need of hip surgery, yet Toronto has limited experience in hip resurfacing doctors. This has left a void for patients in urgent need of this procedure.
Recognizing this gap, Dr. Brooks at the Cleveland Clinic has been able to help a number of Ontarians receive the appropriate treatment.
Resurfacing of the hip offers several advantages compared to traditional total hip replacement in young, active patients. Much less bone is removed from the upper femur (thigh bone), activity levels are completely unrestricted after full recovery, and there are fewer problems with popping out (dislocation) or unequal … Read the rest

BHR HIP ARTHROPLASTY
When it comes to the total hip replacement using the BHR (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing) method, only the articular surfaces are being replaced. Of all the systems available on the market, BHR has the longest – independently verified – history of clinical use.
It is a bone-sparing surgery, since the femoral head is maintained in its entirety, and it is covered with a so-called cap. The second component of the prosthesis is an artificial acetabulum. The traditional large prosthesis stem inserted in the canal of the femur is not a part of this solution.
This method is called hip resurfacing or overlay prosthesis. The differences … Read the rest
