I had my BHR – Birmingham Hip Resurfacing at the age of 15 due to perthes disease. It has been absolutely fantastic since I have had it. Mr Treacy was my surgeon. I think this year will be a milestone, I will have lived longer with a BHR in my right hip than a normal one!
I have always been active, going to the gym, hiking, cycling (long distances), swimming.… Read the rest
UPDATE April 7, 2018
I’ve not been on the site for a while as I had my hip resurfacing in Birmingham (UK) in 2014 with Mr. Treacy and haven’t had a problem since. I’ve returned quickly to endurance cycling, yoga, walking and all activities. i have slight restrictions in yoga but hardly noticeable.

Just had my second day of physio after resurfacing in Birmingham with Mr Treacy 48 hours ago. I discussed swelling with physio and she echoed the comment from above that it can come and go and is usually an indication from the body that you’ve pushed things on a bit. I’d take it easy for a couple of days and put the clubs away for a while … Read the rest
My name is Bill Thom, aged 67 and a Scot living in London. My hip operation was a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure and was done on November 2nd 2009. I had been consulting my surgeon Mr. Ronan Treacy for about 7 years as my hip was gradually deteriorating which made it difficult for me to enjoy an active life. I am an accomplished ski-er and I also play tennis every week. It was becoming increasingly clear that the BHR solution was pretty ideal for me and eventually, the hip joint showed signs of serious wear and Mr. Treacy advised that it was now up to me to decide whether to have the surgery.
I was fortunate as I had private medical cover that would cover … Read the rest
October 26, 2016 – Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary of my right BHR with Ronan Treacy
Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the decision to have this procedure. I only discovered this site after the op and had some good fortune to arrive in Ronan’s hands but mostly this was due to the hard work, patience and support of my wonderful partner.
Every day life, I have no discomfort whatsoever. Everything is completely normal and the couple of holidays/short breaks I have had since I have often been on my feet all day and even climbed mountains without a twinge.
In terms of my sporting recovery, on the cycle, I would say this is 99% complete. … Read the rest

Just thought I’d let you all know that I took part in and won gold in a judo competition on Saturday in the -100kg bracket. Both hips fine and still going strong.

I’ve been sat on the fence and reading with interest (for the last 18 months) all the useful info on this site.I check in every day to see the latest blogs to try and gain as much knowledge as I can.
Some 20 years ago I was diagnosed with early osteoarthritis and told to calm down my sporting activities and expect a replacement at some point in the future.Needless to say I never calmed down and carried on with Martial arts,Moto-x,Enduro and Mountainbiking. With no regrets.
Slowly my hips got worse.First to go was the kickboxing then moto-x,then 2 years ago I rode my last enduro.I found xc mountain biking was a good compromise and have been regulary competing in marathon style events … Read the rest
July 24, 2016 Birthday boy today, so decided to treat myself to a come back race. Entered in the vets class at The Fast Eddy xc series and came away with a nice 4th place. A very testing and fast 15 minute lap was laid on,comprising of a MX track, fast open fields and a very technical and rough forest. After 2 1/2 hours my knees were shot but my 11 month old BHR was perfect.
Back home now, on the sofa eating birthday cake and no hip pain whatsoever. Still life in the old dog. Happy Days.
2 Year Anniversary Update – October 27, 2017
Tomorrow will be the 2 year anniversary of my right side BHR with Dr Treacy. And it remains one of the best decisions I ever made and could not be happier.
For me, as a keen triathlete, it’s been all about getting back to the being competitive and racing at the same standard I did before the hip became a problem. I had at times forgotten the more important target of running pain free. Last year I returned to racing but found in the last K or two of a race I would get tired, lose running form and the hip would get sore. As I could walk this of in 50m or so it wasn’t a … Read the rest

Gave myself a christmas treat and went for my first post op ride.Just over three months since my BHR,and feeling good so got hold of some troy Lee padded shorts and did a 23km hilly road ride on my MTB.It was my old after work quick training loop which I used to in 58 mins.Just managed 1h6mins in bad wind and rain,so quite pleased for the first outing in a while.Hip feels fine, wish I could say the same for the fat belly hanging over the top of my shorts. Can finally start training for the new season and some upcoming events.Merry biking xmas.

Well I am now officially a bilat.
The operation was not routein however. It took Mr Treacy 45 mins and there were some complications. I bled an awful lot in theatre and think there was a lot of Spurs and osteophyte as well as my dysplasic socket.
I had to be kept in recovery for about 3 hours as there was no bed space on the wards. When I was taken to the ward my condition RAPIDLY declined and I ended up going into cardiac arrest. The crash team had to be scrambled and they had to restart me. Feel better now but not great.

Sharon’s Hip Resurfacing with Mr. Treacy 2010
I was helped 4 years ago with Vicky Marlow and Surface Hippy. Because of the fantastic support and information I had a BHR on my left hip at Birmingham by Mr Treacy. when I was 55.
I have been pain free and very active ever since. I actually forgot all about it until I met a friend recently who has arthritis in her hip.
Keep up the good work!

Kal’s Hip Resurfacing by Mr. Treacy 2008
July 11, 2008
So, I left San Francisco on June 19 on upper class ticket with Virgin-Atlantic non-stop (10.5 hours) and arrived on June 20 in London. My girlfreind Debbie, her daughter and my daughter accompanied me and we stayed the weekend in London and left to Birmingham(2.5 hour drive) on Sunday June 22 – rented an apartment in city centre near shopping center known as Mailbox. Nice area with ample restaurants and grocery store within walking distance and only 10 minute cab ride to hospital. Checked into Priory hospital following day June 23 at 11am, which is a day prior to surgery. Mr. Treacy has all his patients check in a day prior, which seemed to be … Read the rest

January 24, 2013
As of today I am 3 weeks post-op.
So far I feel happy to be cautious and not push my recovery.
I’m able to walk short distances with 1 crutch and all feels ok.
I still occasionally take pain killing medication, either once during the day, or before I go to bed.
Since arriving home from hospital I have walked outside, with both crutches, every day (except one day when we had @ 4" snow). Week 1 for 20 minutes, weeks 2 and 3 for 1 hour. It is my favourite part of every single day.
In weeks 1 and 2 I did struggle with swelling around the knee of the operated leg. I was … Read the rest
Jame’s Hip Resurfacing with Mr. Treacy at 17 years old in 2006
October 6, 2012
Basically at the age of 17, I had a right BHR by Mr. Treacy. 6 years on I am pain free and virtually at 100% with mobility, although I don’t jog or run on it..
I cycle and swim and I am quite into resistance training, not doing MASSIVE amounts of weight but just like to keep in shape and maybe put on a few pounds.
I wanted to know if by any means this is reducing the longevity of the hip?
For example I do squat a small amount of weight. Will this have adverse effects? (Perhaps up to 40kg) Because obviously I do not want to be giving … Read the rest
January 16, 2009, I had a left birmingham hip resurface done by Ronan Treacy in June 2006. I have had no problems, no complications and very little pain/discomfort. I lead a fairly active life, hiking the moors and fields with my working gundogs as well as running around a show ring with them, again no problems.
Although I had my op done privately, I was previously seeing an NHS surgeon and Mr Treacy felt it would good to keep seeing this surgeon on an annual basis, just to keep a check on things because I am in Scotland and he is 5hrs away in Birmingham. Mr Treacy checked my hip 18mths ago and an xray was taken and all was good. I saw my NHS … Read the rest
October 19, 2007 So, I am 2 1/2 weeks out from my hip resurfacing with Mr. Treacy in Birmingham, UK. The plane flight back to Colorado was easy on my hip but just very draining overall. This was my second hip surgery on my right hip, prior to the BHR I had surgery for labral tears, microfracture and the rebuilding of my ligementum teres, which was a stabilizing ligament between the femoral head and the acetablum. I am not that young at 43, but very active, plus tall 5’9′ and 125 lbs with a very small frame. I must admit that this second surgery has been so much easier than the first, I have no pain just the itching of my scar. I walk about … Read the rest
