Hip Resurfacing at Surface HippyPosted on by Patricia Walter
Video of my first two weeks after my hip resurfacing on my right hip with Mr. Treacy in the UK. I had my left hip done 6 years ago in 2013 with Mr. McMinn. I now have bilateral hip resurfacing with a BHR, Birmingham Hip Resurfacing.
Best thing I have ever done! Got my left hip resurfacing with Mr McMinn in 1999 and 20 years later it’s still great. I’m an active person doing cycling, walking, swimming, gym and judo. A normal hip replacement would have probably been revised 20 years ago! Right hip resurfacing done in 2014 and perfect and still very active at nearly 67.

May 3, 2018 – I’m in good health and busy with a garden project, rebuilding a garden wall. Still competing in motorsport, 3rd in the ACSMC class championship with my 1973 Alfa Romeo GTAm. Still have the STYLUS 231BHP racer but not competing with it right now . Both hips functioning well, one at 18yrs, the other 3yrs now, thanks to Mr McMinn and team.
On 30th July 1997, Mr McMinn performed the world’s first Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) operation. Two decades later, we are celebrating the success of this bone-conserving procedure, pioneered by Mr McMinn, with the people whose lives have been changed by BHR surgery.
The video and photos that patients have sent in to celebrate 20 Years of Hip Resurfacing has been eye opening and amazing. We couldn’t include everyone in our longer in depth video so we created this shorter and snappier piece to give you a feel of the immense variety of activities that our patients enjoy after their procedures.
November 11, 2017 – It is the eighteenth anniversary of my right side BHR being implanted. It has been well used, is still playing tennis several times a week and has improved my quality of life beyond measure.
The left side one was four years last month – also doing fine.
I post this because I guess it is one of the oldest that are mentioned here and I hope it will encourage people that their hip resurfacing really can last. I remember hoping to get fifteen years or so out of it. Now hoping it will last as long as I do!… Read the rest

I had my left hip BHR resurfaced on 20th Nov 2000 by Mr D Mcminn and was working again , landscaping and race driving 3 months later. It’s brilliant and has kept my right hip going much longer than seemed possible ie. 13 yrs , but it now really badly needs doing. I can’t walk far , say half a mile max with a stick plus a lot of pain through my hip/knee and leg. My question to any surgeon willing to reply is ———– Can this be done on the NHS as I’m no longer in the position to pay , as was the case in 2000 and would really like to have this same very successful BHR method on my … Read the rest

Metal-on-Metal (MoM) Hip Resurfacing has been around longer than many people realise. The BHR actually belongs to a family of MoM resurfacings that Mr McMinn began developing in the early 1990s. Hip resurfacing was of course introduced as an alternative to total hip replacement (THR) and aimed at younger patients whose active lifestyles made them unsuitable for a THR.
Mr McMinn’s earliest MoM design, The McMinn Resurfacing, was implanted in a number of patients in 1991. One of those patients, Mitchell Hill from Shropshire, was just 24 when he had surgery. In the summer of 2011, Mitchell reached a phenomenal milestone – 20 years with his hip resurfacing.
“Before the operation, things were pretty dire,” Mitchell explains. “I’d dislocated my leg and the pain was … Read the rest

Australian Boxing Legend Anthony Mundine gears up for long-awaited re-match following Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) surgery with Mr McMinn
Last March, superstar boxer Anthony Mundine flew all the way from Australia to the United Kingdom to sort out his hip troubles. Anthony had been suffering from hip problems for several years and chose to travel to the UK for BHR surgery with Mr McMinn because, in Mundine’s words, “To get the best outcome you’ve got to go to the best surgeon and Mr McMinn is one of if not the best surgeon in the world.”
Immediately following his surgery, Mundine spoke of his ambition to return to the boxing ring for a showdown with his old rival Danny Green, dubbed ‘The … Read the rest
