My BHR is 12 years old. I have not ever had any problems with it or my hip. The real problem is that it is doing great while the rest of my 73 year old body is wishing it could also get an overhaul. LOL
Hip resurfacing is still a great option when you are a good candidate. There are very few problems with hip resurfacing for most people. There are always a few who do, unfortunately, have problems. Fortunately, there are not many.
The top experienced surgeons who have done thousands of hip resurfacings continue to have excellent results. Many other surgeons who did not do a large number of hip resurfacings no longer continue to perform the surgery. It is a difficult surgery … Read the rest
I recently realized that my 10 year anniversary of my hip resurfacing is here! I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. De Smet in late 2007. About five years ago, I had my metals level checked and sent the results to Dr. De Smet…his reply was that it looked like my hip would be fine for at least 100 more years (metals levels were fine). Since then, I’ve done exactly the same thing with my hip every day: ignore it. My hip feels like it’s always felt since my surgical incision healed, which is that it is an integral and natural part of my body. I am grateful to Dr. DeSmet for giving me my life back. I surf, … Read the rest
2 Year Update December 21, 2017
A much overdue report on my experience with Dr. de Smet and my new right Conserve + hip. I don’t wish to repeat all of the good information already available on this site, but let me say that it has been an invaluable resource and I have referred many locals to it after they have seen my progress in the gym and at at my workplace. I have been going to the same gym for over 20 years and when I showed up post op they thought I’d sprained an ankle or something and were shocked to discover that I had a hip resurfaced . I think this reaffirms the importance of optimal conditioning PRE surgery and early activity … Read the rest

I have about a week before my surgery next week. I’m a 49 year old female, born with hip dysplasia. I’m an avid rower and a cyclist and I’ve had bone-on-bone arthritis for at least two years. I was able to ride and row all season, and even got in one of each over the holiday weekend, which I’m happy about.
If it weren’t for this site I’d be having a hip replacement, I’m sure. I’m most looking forward to being able to stand, walk, and sleep without pain. Oddly enough I can row hard and ride hard easier than I can just stand around. The weight bearing is a killer.

I had a bilateral done on 29th of April this year Dr DeSmet. After 8 years of suffering I finally got through all the issues of Back pain (2 replacement disc’s) knees issues and numb feet issues and yes burning left hip and weak flexion on the right side (limping) The recent surgery has at this stage only 3 weeks after the surgery changed or fixed 90% of all of that and I can sleep. I am almost off pain killers and have the left leg to sort out right leg seems real good. These get hit rather hard when they get dislocated for surgery.
Interesting Dr DeSmet used the Conserve plus which is not available in the US now due to … Read the rest
Just want to thank everyone involved in my Hip replacement at Anca Medical center. I had high expectations of fast recovery but this is incredible. To try walking with crutches the day after the operation and be able to walk in the city of Gent 4 days after operation was amazing. Today its 8 days since operation and I can walk without crutches. Yesterday me and my new friends took a day tour to Brugge as walking training. I still use crutches for balance.
11 Year Update 3/15/2017 – My BHR is 11 years old today. It is a gift I received from Dr. De Smet from Belgium 11 years ago. I remember the surgery day as if it were yesterday – the day I was out of pain. I have been out of pain and active since then. Never had a problem and just don’t think about my hip. I am 72 now and hoping to live until I am 100 with the same BHR in my left hip! I never regret the day I flew to Belgium to have surgery and would do it again, in a heartbeat. Although we have wonderful, experienced surgeons in the US now, Dr. De Smet is one of the most experienced … Read the rest

December 26, 2016 – Life seems to be a never ending story of learning and trying to achieve certain goals in life – or get back to a normal “you” or to try and fit back into society.
I had my bilateral resurfacing April 2015 and most has gone well. Although I am not fond of the scars and appearance the functionality and pain has changed my life.
Arthritis is not nice stuff and I have many family member given their opinion of my health and lost many friend over what has happened due also to their opinion.
I also lost a fantastic job in which I had passion for. Simple stuff but that’s me……

I am one month out of bilateral hr with Dr DeSmet. Can’t say enough about the quality of patient centred care. Wondering how soon I can do stairs without crutches. I am feeling pretty balanced and strong. I am a lot more tired than I expected I would be. Wondering if this is normal. This site helped me get my bearings. Want to say thanks!

Wondering if any of you bilats out there noticed unevenness in your gait. My right leg tends to swing out when I am fatigued. Thinking at four weeks out I need to work on adductor strength?

As some background to my bilateral surgery – I’m a 37yr old female. 9 years ago I put my SIJ out playing squash but never got it seen to as v shortly thereafter was sick for 3 years with chronic fatigue. After getting better from that illness and back to sport I then developed piriformis syndrome on my left hip, that after 2 years of treatment had a release surgery – terrible decision. Anyway I then was very unlucky and had a tubing accident where I tore the ligament and cartilage in both hips leading me to lots of pain in both hips. 3.5 years, 5 unsuccessful scopes later (yes 5) with the discovery of dysplasia and a small degree of arthritis … Read the rest
October 3, 2016 – I just completed my 3rd Half marathon down now to 6 minute K’s with still some issues but getting there for an younger old fella it is great. I feel sorta normal. I have lost the pain when stopping after the 2 hours now as it used to hurt like hell in the hips but now that is settled in.
Today (March 15, 2016) is the 10th anniversary of my BHR (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Device by Smith and Nephew) surgery. My BHR is still going strong with no problems at all. It feels just like my other unoperated hip – normal.
I traveled to Dr. De Smet in Belgium in 2006 because there were not many experienced hip resurfacing surgeons in the US. Also, I did not have health insurance and could not afford surgery in the US. Dr. De Smet had performed about 2000 surgeries at that time and was used by many hip patients in the US. I talked to quite a few of his patients via email and phone. I also emailed Dr. De Smet and he answered all my questions.… Read the rest
