How to Use a Walker
DO NOT put more weight on your operated leg than was allowed while you were in the hospital. Do you know your “weight bearing status?” If not, ask your doctor or therapist.
To sit:
-
Back up until you feel the chair against the back of your legs.
-
Slide your operated leg forward and lower yourself slowly into the chair using armrests.
Try to sit in a chair that has armrests. DO NOT sit in rocking chairs or chairs with wheels
To stand:
-
Scoot forward in the chair with your operated leg out in front of you.
-
Use both arms to push yourself up to standing, then reach for the walker.
To walk:
Keep your walker FLAT on the floor |
Other things to remember when using a walker: DO NOT pivot too quickly. Take small steps and turn toward your strong leg. |
DO NOT lift the walker off the floor. |
DO NOT pull up the walker when rising from sitting. |
