Ontario Canada Birmingham Hip Resurfacing covered by OHIP at Cleveland Clinic by Dr. Brooks
A Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Solution for Young, Active Patients with Hip Arthritis in Ontario
Toronto is North America’s 4th largest city and has the fastest growing population in need of hip surgery, yet Toronto has limited experience in hip resurfacing doctors. This has left a void for patients in urgent need of this procedure.
Recognizing this gap, Dr. Brooks at the Cleveland Clinic has been able to help a number of Ontarians receive the appropriate treatment.
Resurfacing of the hip offers several advantages compared to traditional total hip replacement in young, active patients. Much less bone is removed from the upper femur (thigh bone), activity levels are completely unrestricted after full recovery, and there are fewer problems with popping out (dislocation) or unequal leg lengths. In the right patient, resurfacing lasts as long as, or longer than, total hip replacement, and options are better and safer if future surgery is required. An experienced surgeon is needed, due to the complexity of the procedure. Men have better results than women, so only men are currently approved for these referrals.
Cleveland Clinic, a global nonprofit academic medical centre, has provided world class care to people from around the world since 1921. Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Peter Brooks has had a large and highly successful hip resurfacing practice at the clinic since 2006. He has performed more than 3,000 resurfacing procedures using the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System (BHR). This device has the longest and best track record. He is originally from Canada, graduating first in his medical school class at the University of Toronto in 1979. He did his orthopaedic residency at Harvard University, and further training in joint reconstruction at the University of Toronto, where he was on staff until moving to Cleveland Clinic in 1991.
