|Birmingham Hip Resurfacing through Anterior Incision
Three days in hospital, two weeks with walker, eight days with cane and back on my two feet I was a somewhat serious runner in the nineties (five marathons) but had tapered to three miles three times a week while playing tennis (doubles) three times a week. I started to notice an onset of pain while running and playing tennis and eventually decided to see a doctor. I live in the New Orleans area and this was during the Katrina rebuilding so I was only able to get an appointment to see and Orthopedic Assistant. He took one frontal X-ray and said “Well, I see the problem”. Looking at the x-ray he pointed out the hip sockets where there

Even though my specific case is atypical, my story is not. I call it atypical in that my need was not due to Osteoarthritis, wear and tear, running (in high school I was a athlete), or over weight. The only explanation for my dramatic loss of cartilage in my hips was that I have Psoriatic Arthritis (PA).
About 3 and a half years ago, after a routine check up with my rheumatologist, when I had my major joints X-rayed for their 2 year update, she called me up with the results and mentioned that I should replace or resurface my hips, as I have no cartilage in my right hip and 25% left … Read the rest

I am a 55 year old female and have had arthritis in my hips for several years. In February 2012 I started experiencing pain which led me to consult an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays revealed bone on bone along with a bone spur. Doctor wanted to do total hip replacement. I was not in that much pain and did not want to move forward. He told me when I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do, come back.
In February 2013 I knew it was time to do something, but I did not want total hip replacement. Fortunately, my family doctor, Dr.Zimmerman, recommended I make an appointment with Dr. Kusuma to see if I … Read the rest

Before surgery, Dr. Sharat Kusuma and associates were recommended to me by two friends that had successful hip treatments.
I went on the minimally invasive orthopedics website to investigate my options for treating my sore left hip. X-rays showed a spur and arthritis. The hip resurfacing procedure looked like an option.
On November 2012 Dr. Kusuma determined that I could have the hip resurfacing procedure.
He and his staff explained all the details. I even watched an operation of this kind on the web. It did not look that bad.
Finally my surgery was scheduled for April 24, 2013. After walking 9 holes of golf on April 22 with a painful ending, I knew … Read the rest

I am 6 weeks out from my Birmingham Hip resurfacing operation. I had the surgery with Dr.Kusuma at Grant Bone and Joint Center in Columbus Ohio. I’m sorry I waited 2 years to be able to walk without pain again. The staff at Grant Medical Center was awesome. The surgery went well and the recovery is going well.
I had been having problems with my right hip for about 2 years. It got to a point where my leg would give out as I was walking – so it was time to get something done about it. SurfaceHippy has a lot of information, but I was pleased to get all my remaining detailed questions answered … Read the rest
Chris H’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2012
As a gunshot survivor, I suffered from partial paralysis that led to the eventual degradation of my right hip. At age 16, I had a major hip reconstruction that left my right foot mostly paralyzed — this was a very sad and unexpected outcome from what I thought would be my "saving grace." Unfortunately, Hip Resurfacing was not a known or popular option 22 years ago.
I was lucky to come in contact with the surgeon, Sharat Kusuma, through a family member. He welcomed my condition with open arms and strongly suggested the hip resurfacing procedure. At that time I was in immense pain in my lower back and neck, and was also desperately hoping for … Read the rest
Ron’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2010
My name is Ron and I am 65 years old. I have always been a busy body and love to work outside on my pool and then yard. I have always been an active person. 3 years ago, I began having pain in my left hip that caused me to limp and I was unable to do a lot of things that I normally would do.
I went to see Dr. Kusuma at Grant Medical Center. He informed me that I had hip OA. He gave me a steroid shot and I felt great…for only a week, unfortunately. Next step was surgery. I was a candidate for a BHR. I had the surgery in October 2010.
Upon waking … Read the rest

When I learned about the arthritis in my hip by my family doctor, he recommended talking to Dr. Kusuma. On my first visit he explained all of the options that were available to me and told me that it was my choice what course of action I wanted to take if and when the pain became worse.
When the time came that the pain medicine quit being effective, we discussed the temporary fix that the cortisone shot would have, but I wanted to hear more about the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. He explained that more of your hip joint is left intact compared to a normal hip replacement. I was impressed to learn that he went to Birmingham, … Read the rest
Jeff Asman Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2012
My name is Jeff Asman. I am a commercial industrial painting contractor I am currently 54 years old and I live in Dublin Ohio. In 2009 I went to a orthopedic back doctor for a strained back I hurt while playing golf, my x-rays revealed that I had not injured my back as I had suspected but that I had some arthritis, nothing serious, but the x rays also revealed that my left hip was bone to bone and my right hip was close. I had no idea and the doctor told me that I would need a hip replacement in a short period of time.
I had absolutely no idea, and it totally freaked me … Read the rest

I am in my mid 40’s and 2 post post op from my Birmingham Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma.
My hip was previously in really bad shape for the past 5 years or so. I had a bad limp and had to do stretches/excercises 20 minutes a day just to keep ambulatory. I had little range of motion and often felt a dull ache. I attribute it to playing a ton of basketball until my hip troubles became an issue when I was about 35 or so.
My primary care physician recommended Dr. Kusuma and I couldn’t be happier with the results of the surgery. Dr. Kusuma and his support staff were excellent as … Read the rest
No regrets – live life while you can!!!
In 2009 I was 34 and running about 20-30 miles per week and surfing every chance I had, but something wasn’t right. It was taking more and more miles on the road to get my stride warmed up and pace going and when I surfed I was feeling more and more stiff; since I worked behind a desk during the day I just attributed these symptoms to desk legs. In November of that year the pain came on and I could not even run around the block, let alone pop up on the surfboard. In January my chiropractor orders x-rays when treating me for my lower back pain and low and behold I was told I had … Read the rest

My name is Liz and I am a healthy and active 43 year old. As I write this, I still can’t believe I have had bi-lateral hip resurfacing!. I just had my one year check up and I feel like I got my life back!
I had a BHR on my left hip in October of 2011 and a BHR on my right hip 7 months later in May of 2012.
I started having hip pain in my early 30’s after I had my daughters. I was a competitive swimmer in high school and college, but never had an injury. I tried several Doctors and treatments but the pain always came back with a vengeance.

In the summer of 2009 I had to find a fix for the pain I experienced every time I played Senior Softball. At age 64, I was using pain killers at every game. A fellow player told me I probably needed hip surgery, but he recommended resurfacing over a total replacement. Someone advised me to visit Dr. Kusuma at Grant Hospital.
After consulting with Dr. Kusuma, I found I was a good candidate for hip resurfacing, as I had good bone density, was in good physical shape, and I was not over weight. I was a little concerned due to this procedure being rather new, but I understood that it was a better choice for those people who wanted to stay active and play sports, … Read the rest

Thanks to Dr. Sharat Kusuma’s skillful use of the Birmingham hip resurfacing technology, I’ve gone from needing a cane to walk to being able to play soccer daily as much as 4 hours and chase 4 grandkids…with no pain whatsoever…oh, and I’m 60.
Got tackled from behind while playing soccer about 10 years ago. May have dislocated my hip but kept playing soccer in pain anyway for several years. Tried a variety of physical therapies but still a too much pain to really play competitively…and eventually so much pain needed a cane to walk.
Three years ago, finally decided that I had to do something about my hip. If at all possible, wanted to be able to play … Read the rest

I am 2 years post op this coming June and I wish I would have had them done sooner.
The details: I am now 51 years old. I played basketball three times a week up to age 41. Was athletic all through school growing up. I started having lower back issues around the age of 42 and went to a chiropractor that did not give me relief from the pain that I was experiencing. At 46 I went to get X-rays and the new chiropractor informed me he couldn’t help me and told me to see a Orthopedic Surgeon. Bobby Dawes Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2010
My name is Bobby Dawes. I was diagnosed with degenerating cartilage (hip) in 1989. I lived with the discomfort for 15 years and in 2004 had my first hip (right hip) replaced. It went so well and my activity began to include some impact (basketball), until the other hip needed replaced.
In 2010 had a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing on left side and it went marvelous. Activities now include biking, lifting, golf, cardio, etc No pain and great range of motion compared to before. First hip was performed by Dr. Ray Wasalewski at Grant and BHR was done in same practice by Dr/ Sharat Kusuma. Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

I have been an avid biker for many years. In the latter part of 2009 I began getting pain in the left hip area. It was moderately annoying during biking and quite severe while walking. My primary care MD ordered radiographs and I was found to have severe arthritic degeneration of the left hip and early degeneration on the right. I consulted with several orthopods in my area and they were quick to recommend hip surgery with a rod down my leg.
I had heard of Dr. Sharat Kusuma through a mutual friend. He actually trained with the innovators of the Birmingham Resurfacing technique in Birmingham, England. I had the preliminary radiographs, blood work and bone scan in Florida. … Read the rest
