Dennis Pinkard’s Hip Resurfacing by Tennessee Orthopedic Assoc 2022
October 22, 2022
Left hip resurfaced by Tennessee Orthopedic Association in Nashville, TN, 17 October. I am in the painful phase of recovery. I am 75 and older than most who have this surgery but because of Vietnam Service I have leukemia and was trying to stay away from the bone marrow. Also, I have run numerous marathons and was a long distance runner for more that 50 years. I’ll be a slow healer but look forward to getting back active. I am 75 years old.

Almost 4 weeks post BHR and back to Nashville for dr visit Monday. Gradually increasing weight on resurfacing but waiting to be told ok to eliminate walker. It feels ok but some remaining pain. Doing exercises and chilling.

I recognize that those who have issues with resurfacing are the ones who are most likely to take to the airwaves to cite issues they are having. As one who had surgery about 8 weeks back and still using a cane, after 6 weeks on a walker, I am now worried that maybe mine will never be completely pain free and full unlimited function will not return.
So, I hope some of you who have had complete success will occasionally contribute to give hope to those of us who chose resurfacing when total hip replacement was maybe an easier option. I, of course, know several who have had THR and most are happy with the outcome and knew the outcome considerably faster than I will know the final outcome. I explain what I had done to others and they ask me whether I am happy with the results. I can only answer that it is to early to know.

On the left is day of surgery left hip, 17 October. The one from 14 Nov is 4 weeks later. Now at 11 weeks I am still having some pain and use a cane most of the time. I was on a walker 6 weeks. The cane helps make my stride more normal. Given that I am 75, is there anything unusual about having some pain this far after surgery? Is placement as it should be?
I have 2 more physical therapy sessions next week and I do some daily exercises on my own. I return for X-ray and doctor visit 30 January

Visited doctor/surgeon today for X-ray and assessment of BHR completed 17 October 22. After viewing X-ray and checking range of motion and resistance he chatted with me a few minutes. He also observed my stride without my cane and was pleased with progress. Then he told me that my only reason to return would be if I need him. He suggested that I wait 6 more weeks before returning to golf. It was a nice send off. After hearing from some of you I plan to wait a full 6 months before becoming fully active as a walker, lifter, and gardener. Although a long distance runner for 50 years, I will not return to running. I am 76.
