Spencer Roberts RBHR Dr. Rogerson 2008
I’ve done triathlons for the past 20 years. I had a bicycle crash about 20 yrs ago which started my OA on my right hip. I had to stop running about 4 yrs ago and decided to get RBHR this year, 2008. I had my pedal stoke analyzed in March 08 and I was pedaling 60% with my left and 40% with my right.
I first heard about the BHR from Floyd Landis after the tour in 06. I consulted with Scott Tinley quite a bit before opting for Dr. Rogerson to do my BHR.

I’m two weeks post op and I would suggest to go into surgery as fit as possible without putting yourself in pain. I can only speak for myself but I was teaching 5-8 spinning classes a week and riding outside on the weekends for 1-2hrs up some good climbs. I also tried to lift 2x/week without hurting my hip. However this had been my routine for the past 4 years when I had to give up running. The key is to ramp up your intensity (if you can) and keeping the volume either the same or even less. My weight training sessions were 20-30 min induration, spinning classes 1hr, and longest ride outside -2hrs. Cycling is the exercise of choice because of the lack of impact. Also stretch if you can and get some massage. If I can be of further help please feel free to ask.

Just a quick update. I’m 3 weeks post op today (RBHR). I am rid of the TED hose today which is fantastic because walking in Arizona in July is hot enough. I did my first stationary bike ride yesterday (35 minutes) at the PT clinic. I am walking 2 miles/day with a cane handy but mostly just carrying it. Only slight swelling around the incision, no pain. My right leg has atrophied compared to the left but I’m sure the strength will come back.
I’m still icing after exercise and resting during the late afternoon. My early mornings have been devoted to watching the Tour de France which motivates me to get back on the bike. I am also doing acupuncture and massage which are providing beneficial results. My goal is to be back training folks after week 4.

I’ve been doing tri’s and du’s for the past 20 years. I had RBHR in Madison, WI June 26th.
I just passed the three week mark and am walking 2 miles/day most while carrying my cane. I just hopped on the spin bike yesterday for the first time and rode easy for 45 minutes and I’m doing PT 2 times/wk along with acupuncture once a week. Have a little swelling and continue to ice 3x/day.
I’m also a tri coach- check out coachtroy.com and click on Tri Academy coaches. We also run two tri camps here in Tucson in March. Spencer Roberts Tucson, AZJuly 21, 2008
I am going on 4 weeks post op. Like you, I’m definitely not going to try to ride my bike on my trainer for at least another week or two because of the low bars and mounting/dismounting issues.
I’ve been on a spin bike for 45 min 3 out of the past 4 days. I’m not using much resistance but can push a bigger gear today than last Friday. Definitely listen to your body and don’t push too hard. I was training at a very high level of intensity before surgery to improve recovery rate.
I’m planning on going back to teaching a few spinning classes next week although I won’t be going hard at all.July 24, 2008
Four weeks post op today and I taught my first spinning class since June 23rd this morning. I didn’t push it too hard but my heat rate was way up. Even though the class was only 50 minutes, I was very tired afterward. I’ll take it easy the rest of today, watch today’s stage of the Tour de France and get motivated to teach again tomorrow!
