Greetings to Surface Hippies and soon to be Surface Hippies!
Today marks the 10 year anniversary of my bi-lateral hip resurfacing surgery. January 10 and 12, 2011. My resurfaced hips are doing very well and they allow me to be very active and live a healthy life. I am an avid hiker and backpacker even at 65 years old.
I am forever grateful for this amazing procedure and technology. It’s still hard to believe I have metal in my hips because I don’t feel it or have any limitations.

5 years for me today I had a right hand side BHR with Dr Ronan Treacy.
General life, I don’t even think about the hip. Haven’t for a long time. I sometimes notice the smaller Range of Movement on that side when doing things like Yoga, Pilates, Circuits etc sessions but one of the benefits of the Covid situation is my Fiancée working from home and these are her main keep fit activities so we often do them together. The increase in these activities has increased that ROM.
Running and Triathlon wise, things have also improved. Not so much in performance. But then some of that may be due to a lack of Races due to Covid and as such … Read the rest

I have been a long distance runner for almost 3 Decades. I took up the discipline seriously when I was in my early 30s. I peaked at the age of 47, PB Half Marathons in 1.15 (75 mins at the age of 47). I continued to train, race in half and full Marathons until right hip pain in 2017 restricted my performance however, I continued to train and race. I average 50 to 60 mile per week and race at least once a month. I can manage a sub 1.39 1/2 Marathon but not for much longer due to the severe arthritic right hip. I managed to, eventually, be accepted for a resurfacing (after having refused twice the offer of total hip) … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing is still possible for women. See the wonderful stories from active, athletic women below
Only a few hip resurfacing surgeons in the US still do women. If you want a hip resurfacing, you can find out if you are a candidate by emailing the surgeons who do women. Most BHR surgeons no longer do women. Dr. Gross and Dr. Pritchett use different hip resurfacing devices and will give women a hip resurfacing if they are good candidates. Both surgeons have done over 5000 hip resurfacings. Also many of the very experienced overseas surgeons still do hip resurfacing for women. Here is a list of experienced hip resurfacing surgeons:
