A member of the JointMedica team was privileged to have attended the inaugural Pathways Conference, held in London on 4 October 2019. Details of this independent scientific meeting can be found at the following link.
This meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of JRI Orthopaedics. Founded in 1969 by orthopaedic surgeon Ronald Furlong. It is acknowledged within the orthopaedic industry that JRI was the first company to offer a primary total hip replacement implant with Hydroxyapatite coating. https://jri-ltd.com/
This event was chaired by Prof Justin Cobb, Chair of Orthopaedics and clinical lead at Imperial College, London. Prof Cobb also serves as a civilian advisor in orthopaedics to the Royal Air Force and is Orthopaedic Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen. https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/j.cobb
As part of the program for this international event Prof Derek McMinn had been invited to talk specifically on the subject of Hip Resurfacing. http://www.mcminncentre.co.uk/
The title of his presentation being: The Return of Hip Resurfacing
Prof McMinn delivered a pre recorded presentation where he outlined and identified the key advantages Hip Resurfacing has to offer the surgical and patient community. He went on to identify new materials and clinical results gathered from a modest series of specific custom-made metal on Crosslink Polyethylene Hip Resurfacings, which we believe offer a viable alternative to Prof McMinn’s previous Birmingham Hip Resurfacing™ Metal-on-Metal design.
This new concept potentially allows a return of Hip Resurfacing in both male and female patients irrespective of implant size. These materials potentially increase the isoelastic component to bone interface, reducing stress shielding, and have the potential to eliminate the localised production of Metal Ions.
