Scott Rovner’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Rector 2012
On December 21, 2012 I had a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) done on my left hip. I am 56 and have been very physically active all my life. Unfortunately, this has resulted in my eight prior shoulder surgeries and three knee arthroscopies. Needless to say, I have had extensive experiences with orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, and hospitals. In short, my experience with Dr. Rector, Matt Schneider, PA, and Stacy Tomko, Surgical Assistant has raised the bar for excellence compared to all my prior surgeries. I am so appreciative of Dr. Rector’s reassuring bedside manner, surgical skills, and investment in the outcome of my recent BHR procedure.
As mentioned, Dr. Rector did a BHR on my left hip 12/21/2012. All aspects of my surgery (ie. preop; anesthesia; post-op; hospital stay) were smooth and without problems. I would like to mention that my two night/three day stay in the Boulder Community Hospital was excellent. I was walking without crutches in five days, riding the stationary bike at three days, and on the eliptical trainer within three weeks! I had far less post-op swelling and greater range of motion/hip flexibility at three weeks post-surgery than I had when my right hip was done four years prior. My right hip had the same BHR done, but not by Dr. Rector.
I am finding Dr. Rector is more aggressive in his rehabilitation program than was the case with the surgeon who did my right hip. Additionally, Dr. Rector lifted most of the precautionary hip/exercises much sooner compared to when my right hip was resurfaced. I am now at four months post BHR surgery and nearly 100 percent! I am back to doing the same amount of lower body resistance exercises as pre-surgery, at 100 percent of cardio level, duration, and intensity; and painfree. While I have not done any downhill skiing yet, I fully expect to resume next season! I am back doing 50 mile bike rides and have no residual swelling. In short, I am thrilled with how well all aspects of this surgery, rehab, and follow up care have gone.
I am so appreciative of Dr. Rector, his surgical skills, and his post surgery follow up. I can honestly say this surgery has had the best outcome of all my previous shoulder, knee, and hip surgeries. I cannot recommend Dr. Rector enough if you, like me, are having chronic joint pain and wish to stay active in life.
