7 Year Anniversary Boomer’s Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Rector 2011/2012

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on June 13, 2019 by Patricia WalterJune 13, 2019

Yesterday marked the seven year anniversary for my second hip resurfacing. I’m partially retired now. Living in Colorado allows me to do something outdoors almost every day. My recovery was very methodical, so it took me some time to regain the activities I enjoyed before OA slowed me down. I bike a lot, hike in the mountains, lift weights, have a SUP and just this year returned to skiing, which for some reason I was afraid to do in prior years. I don’t ski very well, but I do get down the mountain. My hips are fine now. I’ve taken a couple of falls off of my mountain bike that scared me, but the hips were fine.

I don’t … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on March 31, 2019 by Patricia WalterSeptember 17, 2019

I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Rector on July 24, 2018. I am from San Diego and a lifelong surfer, tennis player, and yoga enthusiast. I first started to experience severe hip pain back in 2011. By the end of 2017 I could barely walk a half mile or sit on my surfboard while waiting for a wave to catch. The pain had become impossible to tolerate for my active lifestyle.

During the summer of 2017 I visited one of the only local surgeons with experience in hip re-surfacing. He told me I was not a resurfacing candidate for several reasons that didn’t make any sense. They were not any of the reasons that I had … Read the rest

October 1, 2016 Update  Last Saturday I was able to climb to the summit of Mt Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado at 14,439 feet.  I have been working up to this challenge for about a year, but had failed in my two previous attempts. The ascent and descent took almost eight hours. I’m pretty slow. I still find it hard to believe that at 62 years old, my Birmingham Hips were able to get me to the summit. It was a remarkable surprise. I think this means that my long recovery is finally complete.

It is very inspiring reading about all the cool things we Hippys are doing. Not surprising, considering what we were doing before our hips wore … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterSeptember 11, 2018

At the anniversary checkup for my BHR surgery I mentioned that I was planning on doing the Triple Bypass bike ride this year.

Throughout the many miles of training leading up to the ride, and during the ride itself, I didn’t have a single problem with my new hip. I couldn’t be more pleased with how things have turned out.

I’m feeling so well that I am also planning to do the Buffalo Classic Epic 110 again this September. I can’t thank you enough for all you have done to help me achieve my goal of completing the Triple Bypass (not to mention being able to walk pain-free again).

Thank you for the great surgical care I received last February.

As a result, I was able to hunt up and down the mountains of New Mexico without any problems. The picture is of an elk my son killed with his bow and I helped pack out up the mountain.

A doctor hunting with us commented that I was definitely fully recovered since I was able to backpack the elk up the mountain. Thanks again for the great care.

At 65 years of age my arthritic hip had taken its toll on my overall health. I lived with pain and a pronounced limp. I could no longer ride a bike, play racquetball, sleep through the night, drive a car for more than 15 minutes or even put on my shoes let alone trim my toenails without severe pain. I had been a runner for years and still clung to the discipline despite the pain. In training for the Horsetooth Half Marathon in April of 2012 I had developed severe pain in my right hip only to find out after the race that I had a hairline fracture of the hip from the impact of bone on bone. … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterSeptember 10, 2018

After a lifetime of almost unlimited activity that included pretty much every ball sport, backpacking, skiing, long distance running and cycling, increasing pain and limited range of motion started to have a major impact on my life. I began dropping one activity after another as my aching hips deteriorated. Toward the end, I limped constantly and I was having difficulty getting on and off of my bicycle. I was 58 years old when I received the news from my orthopedic surgeon that I needed two new hips. I was shocked and completely demoralized by this revelation, and terrified about the medical procedures I knew awaited me. I wasn’t sure I was up to the challenge. It was perhaps the lowest point of my … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

I had a (Birmingham) hip replacement in January 2013, and now, four months later, I am playing high intensity singles tennis—without pain or physical restriction. I feel very lucky, and I give credit to Dr. Rector and his assistant Stacey for the successful surgery and professional treatment. My recovery was smooth, with little pain (thanks in part to the pain killers the first two weeks). I had two weeks of in-home physical therapy, and two weeks after that I was walking and riding a stationary bicycle. I progressed to outdoor bicycle riding after the first two months and then to some light tennis. And today, four months later, I have no restrictions or limitations.

I should mention that I had a (Birmingham) replacement on the … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

On December 21, 2012 I had a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) done on my left hip. I am 56 and have been very physically active all my life. Unfortunately, this has resulted in my eight prior shoulder surgeries and three knee arthroscopies. Needless to say, I have had extensive experiences with orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, and hospitals. In short, my experience with Dr. Rector, Matt Schneider, PA, and Stacy Tomko, Surgical Assistant has raised the bar for excellence compared to all my prior surgeries. I am so appreciative of Dr. Rector’s reassuring bedside manner, surgical skills, and investment in the outcome of my recent BHR procedure.

As mentioned, Dr. Rector did a BHR on my left hip 12/21/2012. All aspects of my surgery (ie. … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

As a 57 year old retired CEO with over thirty years of experience in the medical device industry, I have been in hospitals and ICUs around the world. My experience with Dr. Rector, his staff, and the entire team at Boulder Community Hospital (BCH) can only be described as exemplary. After doing my research online for alternatives to a total hip replacement (whose post implant long term activity restrictions were unacceptable for my lifestyle); I found the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure, and that Dr. James Rector of Boulder was one of the top BHR surgeons in the country. I should have known that my experience with Dr. Rector was going to be special when after leaving a request on his web site for a … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterSeptember 10, 2018

I could not be happier with the miracle of Dr. Rector and my Birmingham Hip Resurfacing! My remade hip has allowed me to get back to my passions – the activities that I love – that were becoming very difficult to nearly impossible before the surgery. I went into surgery with Dr. Rector on October 15, 2010, at 52 years old, to receive a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing on my left hip. I had been in a slow, spiraling descent into loss-of-motion, gimping and pain over the period of about 8 years. It culminated in not being able to sleep at night, 10-12 pain relievers a day, and, most importantly for me, my having to bag out on the activities I love. This was an unacceptable … Read the rest

At 45-years-old I had found that an old soccer injury and a bike crash left me with severe hip pain. I was having significant pain with running and even noticed difficulty walking longer than one mile.  Running was so painful that my participation in triathlons and local running events was becoming obsolete. After a painful ironman triathlon experience I finally decided to visit Dr. Rector and his staff to consider Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. Two years after surgery, I am glad to say that having the surgery was the best decision I could have made.  I am currently participating in triathlon competitions (including ironman), I hiked 48 miles through the Grand Canyon and I am actively competing in local … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful job you did on my left hip. After doing some research, I contacted you regarding the Birminham Hip procedure, and had the resurfacing done on October 16th 2009. In 2005, I had a complete hip replacement on my right hip, which was before the Brimingham hip was approved in the U.S.

The total hip replacement procedure did have a smaller incision, but I had considerably more post operative pain. It took me about 2 months to get where I am now with the Birmingham hip, (less than a month post op). My joint mobility is progressing nicely with physical therapy. I am walking one half to mile per day. I still take a cane along in case … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

I had the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing done on May 4, 2009 and I could not be happier. People ask me about my hip and I tell them it is better than new. No need to say much more. I have ridden my bicycle over 400 miles since then without any issue. It is absolutely better than new and everything that I was told prior to surgery by Dr. Rector’s staff was true. It all went as smoothly as possible.

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 25, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 25, 2017

I’ve been a runner, skier, bicyclist, and mountain climber all my adult life. When told, at age 47, that what I thought was a pulled muscle was in fact a case of advanced osteoarthritis of the hip, and that I should buy a cane and take up swimming, well…I felt like I had aged 20+ years.

Luckily, a friend of mine who had a BHR with Dr. Rector and his team called and said “Gosh, so sorry to hear about your hip, but the good news is that it is totally fixable!” A few months later I had the surgery. Within a few weeks I was walking without crutches or cane; around 4 weeks I was top-rope rock-climbing, and by 6 weeks I was out … Read the rest
