The only words to describe me are, JUST PLAIN HAPPY! This is
life, this is wonderful. At six weeks I was at the halfway
point between the left leg which was surfed 2-35-05 and the
right leg which is going to be surfed 5-27-05. If anyone had
told me that my new leg would be carrying the old one around
at 6 weeks post op I wouldn’t have believed them. But it is
true. The old leg is so crabby. Since I was too timid to
have a bilat like brave Anna was, now I can clearly feel the
difference. And what a difference it is. The BHR is just
acting like it is part of me; I forget it is there until I
run my hand over the scar at night. Last night it felt like
the seam on a pair of blue jeans, just a nice welded 10 inch
part of me. I tried shorts on and it doesn’t show. YES!
I cleaned my refrigerator which was my first unofficial
workout. It was okay til I got to those bottom drawers and I
was bending down to get them clean. I kept thinking, you
need to sit down, so I did. Finally I was done. I threw away
stuff that was from BEFORE my first surf! Why do we keep all
those little bits of things in the first place? That ought
to take care of the fridge til the end of July. Now the stairs. I thought I had conquered the “up”after
doing them 4 times without my crutch, but by the end of the
day, I really need the crutch for the hip that is not
resurfed yet. Gravity is SUCH a powerful force.
At 6 weeks my wonderful husband said,”PT is over”and left me
to my own resources which has for 5 days been absolutely
nothing. I got my swim suit out and thought I would get back
in the pool but the week is half over and I still haven’t
made it yet. I have no stiffness or anything at all from
stopping the post-op exercises. Marc said 6 weeks and we did
6 weeks. It worked. I admire those of you who walk 3 miles.
I could not do that. I can do the grocery store and short
trips to the mall, but it is not 3 miles.
What should I do next for exercise ? To go to a PT here I
have to have a prescription written from a doctor, so I am
working on that.
Looking so forward to the right hip’ surf, 45 days to go.
One hip being surfed improved sex 75%. Two should get me up
to 150% right? The whole thing is amazing. That big huge
muscle on the inside of your leg called abductor hurts and
is hard like a rock on the unoperated side. My new hip
abductor is all happy and normal at 6 weeks. That muscle
seemed to take the longest to get with the program. Having
the two sides to compare gives me even more enthusiasm for
the validity of this prosthesis.
We have so much to thank God for!
