5 Year Update Mikes THR with Mr. Treacy 2012

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 12, 2017 by Patricia WalterAugust 14, 2017

August 14, 2017 – I passed 5 years with my THR last week and it’s flown by. I have no issues at all and like many here, it’s been life changing surgery for me. I couldn’t have HR due to to a slipped femoral epiphysis age 14 and was struggling to accept that but the advice I got here helped so much.

I’m back motorcycling and playing football- those dark days of arthritic pain seem much further away than 5 years!

So for anyone who isn’t a HR candidate, don’t despair- a large ball THR, well placed, is a very good option.
Cheers Mike.… Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on June 16, 2017 by Patricia WalterSeptember 24, 2017

May 27, 2016

Met with my surgeon 2 days ago with a bunch of questions for him. I asked him why I was no longer a candidate for resurfacing & it’s because the bone quality is no longer there.

Makes sense now when he said that he didn’t want to have to do a revision. And when I think of if, there are other tell tale signs in my overall health that supports his findings. A lot can happen in 5 short years.

surgery went very very well. I’ll post more when I’m more awake.

Two4One’s Revision Story from Bilateral Hip Resurfacing 2014

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on October 4, 2016 by Patricia WalterApril 9, 2019

March 18, 2014

I have intractable pain 26 ½ months later after my bilateral Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implants at all times, albeit minimally less than before my hip replacements.  My hip implants feel like they painfully slip out of place when I walk half a block, and they hurt when I sit and when I’m lying down.

BHR MOM is now contraindicated for women as of the beginning of 2012 by the National Joint Registry for England and Wales. – http://www.njrcentre.org.uk/njrcentre/NewsandEvents/Hipresurfacingfailurerates/tabid/260/Default.aspx

Here’s my Medical History to catch you all up on my story:

September 15, 2016 – First, I want to correct that I had my last ceramic and titanium bilateral hip revisions (to a failed bilateral Birmingham Hip Resurfacing) completed in November 2014 – not Nov 2105.

Secondly, after an almost 2 year recovery, I can most happily report that both hips AND knees do not hurt!!  At most, my hips get stiff after prolonged use and I can’t squat as easily.  Those of you who have followed my journey KNOW how amazing this is.

I ended up doing a round of PT for my knees, which did not work.  Then, I researched and found the amazing DIY “Beating Patellar Tendonits” by a Physical Therapist and used it to do an additional … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 31, 2016 by Patricia WalterSeptember 11, 2017

May 14, 2008

I wanted to reply to this topic as my experience illustrates the Pat’s point. I had avn in my left hip; when I started to consult surgeons I was told that I was not a candidate for resurfacing as the femur head had collapsed. I would have preferred to have a resurfacing. But I knew the extent of the damage from looking at my MRI and felt that the surgeons were correct.

While I experience a loss of ROM and functional abilities, I never had a lot of pain with the avn. I didn’t have x-rays taken early on. If I had, resurfacing would have been an option. I do regret that, but things still turned out well.

I had a thr … Read the rest

I’m 4-and-a-half years out on my revision to THR (a la De Smet) and going strong. I would also say that the two year mark was an important dividing line in my recovery from  THR surgery. After that point I never had to worry again about overexerting myself. In terms of performance, I see very little real difference between the THR and the HR. Maybe in some very subtle ways the HR excells a bit but both serve quite well up to this point.… Read the rest

Mike’s 4 Year THR Anniversary with Mr. Treacy 2012

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 2, 2016 by Patricia WalterOctober 1, 2019

August 22, 2019

Just passed the 7 year date of my ceramic/ Poly THR total hip replacement . What a life changer it’s been, I’ve gone from being in near permanent arthritic pain at 50 to a completely pain free life. Happy days.

I went back to see Mr Treacy in May as I had some twinges down the outside of my thigh that concerned me. He took an x ray and showed me that the bone around the stem had thickened up quite considerably and said whatever exercise i was doing, don’t change a thing!

All the walking football etc has helped strengthen the joint and after having me walk up and down past his office with my trousers rolled up, told me I … Read the rest

Melissa’s Original BHR Story

https://surfacehippy.info/melissa-martin-bhr-revison-dr-ball-2011/

The last two years have brought increasing groin pain, instability, and popping/clunking on a regular basis. Two months before my 4th anniversary I became so alarmed at the consistent instability that I obtained x-rays and cobalt and chromium blood tests. Patient advocate, Vicky Marlow, had several surgeons review them for possible causes of my pain and instability. The following are excerpts from the surgeon’s emails:

1. She needs a revision ASAP before the neck on the femur breaks

2. Neck narrowing due to high ions and there will be some acetabular osteolysis at revision. Yes, early revision is indicated

3. The inclination and version angles are high to start with. The cup appears to have migrated

Tim Bratten’s Revision Surgery with Dr. De Smet 2012

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on December 3, 2015 by Patricia WalterAugust 7, 2017

November 9, 2015

I am coming up on 4 years post revision to a THR done by Koen De Smet and this is not necessarily the horror that everyone here paints it out to be. I regularly jog, hike, backpack, rock climb and boulder and my revision to THR works great. In fact, I am much more active than other people I know my age who have not had hip surgery. Anyways, even if revision is the last resort option, if the surgery is done by an accomplished surgeon who uses a good implant system (mine is ceramic on ceramic: no allergy concerns), revision surgery can have a very satisfying outcome.

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 17, 2015 by Patricia WalterAugust 14, 2017
From: Elizabeth Wajnberg To: Carol Thwaite Sent: Friday, November 09, 2007 9:46 PMCarol,I have a surgery date with our good doctor (De Smet) on December 18, not to resurface my other hip, unfortunately, but to extract the resurf I have because I am allergic to the metal! This past summer, my leg swelled, it was drained of much pus which thank God was not infected – nobody knew what it was except Dr. De Smet. At least we can now explain that horrible groin pain I had after the operation, which went away only because I was put on prednisone for the colitis. Now I am on remicade, not as massive an immune suppressant, so the hip inflamed again. One out of 500, says the

ALVAL, PSEUDOTUMOUR, HYPERSENSITIVITY … WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, IT’S A REVISION TO THR

Having visited this site numerous times over the last few years, I thought it was time that I shared my experience with other past and future hip patients. I have recently undergone revision of my ASR to a THR because of a reaction to the metal on metal bearing. I know this issue is in the spotlight of the orthopedic hip community internationally just now as more patients emerge at the 3-5 year post-op mark with unique reactions. I am a female and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip when I was 33 years old (I am now 42). At the time I was an amateur triathlete competing at local

Early on (after resurf Dec’05) I experienced a lot of clicks pops etc and so had others, so whenever I mentioned it to Dr.. Ure and got x-rays which were just simple straight on AP x-rays he said it all looked fine no problems, but it didn’t really go away although when I did a lot of clams, it did go away for awhile, but it returned, the instability as I had come to realize and it got worse and worse. And became crunches and clunks. And I told Dr.. Ure and he said that he really didn’t know what could be wrong and suggested more physical therapy, which didn’t help and the physical therapist felt that some surgical error was involved. And it got

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 17, 2015 by Patricia WalterAugust 14, 2017

Hello Everybody,

Just an update with good news. I saw Dr. Greidanus for my 2 month follow up. He declared that I now have no restrictions allowing for a return to cross trainers, stairmasters, bicycles, and even tennis. I was referred for physio for “aggressive” treatment. I had related in an earlier post the following: I had a resurface with Dr. Antoniou in Montreal on Jan. of 2005. It was the ASR by Depuy of Johnson and Johnson.

For 18 months my hip was great, but beginning in Sept. 06 pain came quite suddenly and became worse for months. I was misdiagnosed first with bursitis, then with heterotrophic soft tissue ossification , and finally a minor infection for the pain. After that long distance of

Failed BHR & surgeon experience August 02, 2008

I am 18 months post LBHR and I am posting today with the hope that I can spare anyone contemplating the resurfacing procedure the consequences of choosing a surgeon with insufficient experience. I chose a surgeon who had only recently trained in England, I was his 7th resurfacing procedure. I justified the decision because he was local and had a stellar reputation. I foolishly reasoned that he would not take on a procedure that was beyond his competency. At four weeks I was complaining of snapping, popping and instability in my surgical hip. Those symptoms have persisted with the same periodic reassurance from my surgeon that the x-rays showed that the “prosthesis is in good position without

Anne BHR Revision to Ceramic THR by Prof Richardson  2011

Went to Doctor’s yesterday and he said I will need a new hip shortly. I’ve been having a lot of pain with the hip re-surface. Not been able to lift my leg upwards without lot of discomfort. This has been going on for 18 months or so but lately it’s got very bad and pain in buttock now as well.

I had the op in Feb 2007. I really thought the re-surface would last longer than this or I would have had the THR done instead. Was 54 when op. done and was just told it was better for younger patients to have the Birmingham hip.

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 17, 2015 by Patricia WalterAugust 14, 2017

January 9, 2000

Hi Pat,

I hope that you are well. I just thought I would email you personally with information for your file and research that has sadly led to me having a revision from BHR to THR. The reason was due to malpositioning of the acetabular cup and femoral component by my surgeon. My surgeon had carried out over 480 hip resurfaces but for some reason a bad day at the office lead to my BHR only lasting 5 months. I have attached to x-rays (photos of my x-rays).Sorry for bad quality. I had the anterolateral approach. He has been very supportive to me since the extent of the problem was diagnosed and even encouraged me to have my revision with Doctor De… Read the rest

Metal allergy – an OS writes

While metal allergies are indeed rare, they can be (or have
the effect of being) all too real…..

My wife is 31 yrs old and had her right hip resurfaced 2
years ago by Dr. De Smet (she originally broke her hip
around 10 years, developed AVN, had an osteotomy 7 years
ago, developed arthritis, which ultimately led us to Ghent –
can’t say enough about the experience there).

Around a month ago she started experiencing terrible hip
pain. X-rays (and a CT Scan) show that the bone just below
the bottom end of the femoral cap is essentially dissolving
(osteolysis).

Blood tests were performed and, while it is not an exact… Read the rest
