Hip Resurfacing at Surface HippyPosted on by Patricia Walter
At age 67, the onset of osteoarthritis in my right hip was precipitous and debilitating. The chronic dull pain led to many sleepless nights and uncomfortable days. My wife (an internist) happened upon an article about BHR in one of her medical journals and suggested that I explore this procedure. After considerable self-study, I was convinced of the merits and advantages of BHR in lieu of the much more common THA approach. However I could not find a surgeon anywhere in my state to perform the operation — it was the recommendation of another orthopedic surgeon that led me to Dr. Rogerson. I was immediately impressed with his intellect, dedication, and humanity. The operation was uneventful and my recovery was rapid, in fact I returned … Read the rest

Just wanted to update the progress of my resurfaced hip done on August 18th. Three days ago I finished a 3000km bike ride from the very top of New Zealand to the very bottom and for the entire ride I had zero issues. In fact I’d forgot that it had even been done at all it was so good!
In November I’m off to climb Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica and I’m sure that will go the same way 🙂
I’ll see you guys when I manage to screw my left hip up…

I had a left BHR on December 14, 2006.
My surgery was performed by Dr. John Rogerson, at Meriter Hospital in Madison Wisconsin. One of the unique features of this procedure was the rehab. It is called “Hip Hab”. It’s a wonderful 5 day rehab program based on the Belguim model of recovery after hip resurfacing. I started to have trouble with my hip in November, 2000 at age 40, about 1 ½ years after the birth of my son. My first symptom was a limp without pain. As the years went by the limp increased and my hip began to hurt. I saw a couple of different orthopedic doctors, none told me about hip resurfacing. They simply said I should wait 15 years or

Was standing on my good leg, operated leg was at about a 90 degree angle while I put some cream on my knee. Probably bent forward and flexed my hip a bit, the operated side knee rotated in and I started to fall. Tried to push with the operated leg to right myself, NO STRENGTH. I collapsed and fell back, noticing a strange friction in the hip joint after landing on my butt.
Called my surgeon’s office and they got me in right away. They took x-rays. Dr. Rogerson said I apparently partially dislocated the hip and it re-located when I fell. Said he had seen this once before. Another tall woman who can hyperextend her elbows like me (flexible joints) dislocated while squatting. He … Read the rest

RBHR March 20, 2008 Dr. Rogerson
I just had my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Rogerson 3/20/08. You cannot do any better than Dr. Rogerson’s surgical skills and the comprehensive program (including rehab) he has set up.
Was in the hospital for 2 days (standard), then discharged to go directly to arranged rehab. My husband drove me about 1 mile to Meriter Heights (a retirement & rehab complex in downtown Madison). We checked into a 1 bedrm apt – 3 or 4 diamond by AAA rating standards – but with grab bars in bathroom, cold packs in the freezer, etc. I had both land and pool PT over the next several days – discharged mid-day Wednesday (6 days after surgery). It is necessary that a

After all the hoopla, travel and what seemed like waiting longer than a full-term pregnancy, surgery is over. I am officially a Bionic Woman. I was scheduled first up at 7:30 on Valentine’s Day, what a way to get that little sparkly something. We’d scheduled a cab for 5:20, since the forecast was for snow (again) and apparently cab drivers in Wisconsin still find it to be a surprise in winter. Of course, they were not on time which raised the anxiety level tremendously. After several phone calls and increasing blood pressure, the cab finally arrived at 5:45. Luckily it was a fairly short trip so we made it on time at 6:00 as scheduled.

I had my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Rogerson on 12/6/07 and have the left scheduled for 2/18/08.
I was thoroughly satisfied with Dr. Rogerson and his team from beginning to end.
Dr. Rogerson is a great surgeon and a very nice man. I immediately felt confident in his abilities after I met him. He and his PA (JoAnna) were exceptionally thorough in their explanation of the procedure and in answering my questions. The office staff is also extremely efficient, friendly and very easy to work with. His office also has you tour the Meriter Rehab facility where you are sent to rehab for 3 days after leaving the hospital. I talked with many people at this facility who were both involved in the rehab

This 51-year-old, male, RBHR hippy is now repaired and freed from the right hip OA that had been the monkey on my back for the past 5 years in the form of pain, limping, and decreased ROM. Being from Rochester, MN, the most common question I get is “why would you want to go over to Madison, WI, for your resurfacing surgery, when you have the Mayo clinic in your back-yard?” The answer, simply put, is John Rogerson and the Capitol Lakes rehab facility. I described my experience at Mayo Clinic in another post on this site, so I won’t go into that again. It’s sufficient to say that upon my initial visit to Dr. Rogerson’s office last October, I knew this was the procedure,

Laura R. was finally able to cross off a goal on her bucket list. Following a right hip resurfacing there was finally no pain holding her back!
“I had my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Rogerson in July 2010. Last fall, October 2014, I hiked with my husband from the north rim to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. 24 miles in 2 days. It was #1 on my bucket list. Thanks Dr. Rogerson and team for making this possible!” -Laura R.
