7 Year Update Jack’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Clarke 2010

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on May 12, 2017 by Patricia WalterAugust 10, 2017
Read Jack’s Full Story Here Nearing my 7 year anniversary this month! I recently had a check up with Dr. Clarke. He told me that the 46mm and smaller BHR’s had been discontinued/recalled due to failures. Luckily mine is larger than that at 50mm. Still, that is a bit disconcerting. I will be going in for a blood metal level test to find out how mine is. He x-rayed it the other day and said that it looked fine. I think my lack of activity in this forum could be viewed as a good thing. I don’t think about my hip resurfacing at all and haven’t in quite a few years. Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 9, 2017 by Patricia WalterAugust 10, 2017

January 14, 2017 – I think my lack of activity in this forum could be viewed as a good thing. I don’t think about my hip resurfacing at all and haven’t in quite a few years. I have been living life as if it never happened, but of course it did. Right now I am 6 years out from the procedure and am very happy to have had it performed.

I recently have had knee troubles and have had to deal with that issue. It has brought prior experiences into my thought process. So, I was thinking about this site and what a tremendous help it was along with all of the people that contribute here.

LBHR Dr. Clarke  October 2007

Story Acquired by Vicky Marlow

I had hip resurfacing for my left hip in mid October of 2007. Four days ago I ran again – not very far of course and on a trail rather than hard concrete – for the first time in almost 20 years and it felt great!

I am completely pleased thus far with the outcome of my surgery.  My surgeon was Dr. Michael Clarke in Syracuse, NY. I can enthusiastically encourage others to consider this procedure. I can now sleep comfortably on either side, I am gaining flexibility in my left hip that I have not had in years, and I have zero pain.

I always remembered the “shoes with the bar” that I wore to bed as a kid. I had no idea why I had to wear them, what I did know is that as soon as my parents went to bed, I would untie them and take them off. I grew up remembering the shoes, but with no real health issues, I didn’t ask questions as to why I wore them. As a kid I could never sit “criss cross applesauce”, but I had agility and strength abound – so I left the shoes behind me as a distant memory, never to be brought up again.

All of that changed as a teenager. I had just graduated high school

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 17, 2015 by Patricia WalterJanuary 27, 2018

I am a physical therapist from Lake
Placid, NY. I had an insidious onset of right hip pain
approximately three years ago which gradually but
progressively intensified. X-rays revealed extensive
(bilateral DJD), and my local orthopod was all set to give
me a total hip replacement. I did an extensive amount
of research, and came across the resurfacing technique.
Intuitively it just made sense to preserve as much
natural bone as possible, so I consulted with Dr
Michael Clarke in Syracuse, NY. I had surgery on
2/28/07, and I am scheduled to have the L one done on
4/30/08. I had an excellent outcome on my R side, and
experienced a significant improvement in pain and
function. This past year I’ve been able to return … Read the rest

March 10, 2013

Well actually my boss who is an M.D. Had hers done by Dr. Clarke about 3 years ago and she is very happy with the outcome. It is weird because I was already his patient before I went to work for her and now find that he did hers also.

I have no reservations about him since he has been doing this for years. The hardest part for me was coming to terms that it won’t get better on it’s own. Now all that needs to be done is to stay psyched that this is just one hurdle to clear before I can start enjoying my formerly active lifestyle.

My procedure went through without a hitch and I am now an official hippy!

On the day of surgery- the 19th

Checked in around ten. Was supposed to be there at ten thirty. The tool me back in no time and started getting me ready. My procedure was scheduled for twelve thirty but Dr. Clarke was running early. I had a consult with the anesthesiologist who gave me the option of general or spinal. I choose the spinal. Before you know it, I had kissed my wife and was on my way around 11. They had a bit of trouble getting the spinal injection in but finally they got it. That’s about the last I … Read the rest

May 4, 2013

This is my first post after months of research on this website. As a matter of fact – I found my second opinion – and my surgeon from this website. Dr. Clarke.

A little back story on me – and my unique situation, I feel that others can gain from hearing my story due to my circumstances – so ill do the best I can to write this all in a way that could be understood.

Today – I am 31 years old – and currently 8 days post op from my second BHR hip replacement, performed on my right leg.

You heard right – 31 years old. The first thing I usually hear … Read the rest

March 1, 2020 10 year anniversary

March 17th is my 10 year anniversary with no pain due to resurfacing of my right hip. It was recalled a couple years ago and when I went in to see the doctor he said as long as I was not having issues it was fine, which I knew already and would never have it removed. It has changed my life, taking away pain.

I was so spoiled by the resurfacing and have never had an issue with it, I even forget it is there.

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 30, 2013 by Patricia WalterJanuary 30, 2013

After years of thinking I had a bad back, in the Sept. of 08, I found out I had a bad hip instead. With moderate degeneration I knew I had to have surgery. So I researched Hip Replacements on the internet. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing popped up and I knew this was just what I needed.

I am a professional photographer and very active. I am also only 51 years old. I don’t run marathons or play tennis, but I work really hard and I need to move unrestricted to do my job right. So I met with Dr Clarke. We had to have a few extra things checked first, (I only have 1 kidney) there was concern about the ions and my kidney’s ability … Read the rest

I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Clarke on April 30, 2008 using the Birmingham hip. Prior to that I had been in physical and aqua therapy for nearly a year, attempting to retain range of motion and strength. My recovery after surgery was very quick. I walked without a cane in less than 3 weeks, and mowed my lawn with a self-propelled walking mower at 3 weeks. All the time I was diligent about my exercise program from my PT. The progress was amazing with noticeable improvement from one day to the next. In a month I was able to walk around my neighborhood (a little over a mile), something I had not been able to do in a couple of years.

Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Clarke March 2008

After three years of groin pain, I began researching options to improve my quality of life. In 2005, I met with two different Orthopedic surgeons both of whom recommended surgery as the only option. While visiting a friend @ Community General Hospital, I saw an information board regarding “Birmingham Hip Resurfacing”. I talked about the technique with my Orthopedist and his recommendation was a Total Hip Replacement. Dr. Michael Clarke, who is in the same practice, was an Orthopedist specializing in BHR and I immediately made an appointment with him. Following the initial meeting, I began a quest to learn as much about the BHR technique as possible. Your website “Surface Hippies” was of great value. I scheduled … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 30, 2013 by Patricia WalterOctober 24, 2017

April 25 was my one year anniversary of hip resurfacing. I am 58 and have always been active and involved in sports. For many years I ran 2 to 3 times per week (just one to two miles). I also play baseball in some tournaments during the summer. Its not that I am an exceptional athlete or runner, it has just always been extremely important to me that I could do these things. Most importantly I love to be out with my kids and now two young grandsons, running around, playing catch or whatever. During 2006 I gradually realized I had a bad hip. I did extensive physical therapy and later had two cortisone shots. Two well respected orthopedics recommended hip replacement. As I researched … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 23, 2013 by Patricia WalterJanuary 23, 2013

After two hip replacements in 5 weeks, I will hopefully never know more about hip replacement than I do now. Right now I’m 12 days post-op hip #2. Both were the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, so may not exactly apply to you. So here’s some of the subtle and not-so-subtle things that you should known.

For me, carrying 25 lbs of recycling to the curb was hurting like hell. If you’re 25 lbs overweight, that’s the same as me carrying 50 lbs of recycling down to the curb and then hauling half of it back up to the garage. Sorry, baby; but if that was the case my garage would have been looking like one of those “Hoarders” shows on TV. Not to get preachy, but … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 23, 2013 by Patricia WalterOctober 24, 2017

I am almost 5 yrs post op on my right hip. At 6 months post op, I started back with a little running, never intending on getting back to the 20-25 miles a week I had been doing before the pain stopped me.   Dr Clarke told me some running is ok but progress slowly and don’t do marathons. It felt so good to run pain free and as time went on I got more confident that nothing was going to go wrong with this hip.

Fast forward a little and in the last 3 yrs I have run my first marathon and several halfs and 15k’s, all in the top half of my age group. I have always run efficiently, using short strides. Training runs … Read the rest
