Piedad Hip Resurfacing Dr. Romash May 29, 2011
May 29, 2011 I had my left hip resurfaced on the 29th by dr Romash of chesapeake…Im home already and doing great. The first day post op was pretty rough when they take you out for a walk, but after that it got much better, Im 46 and athletic, and Im hoping for a quick recovery but my doc is very conservative, hipnhop, i read all your posts and that helped, jimclain, thanks for all the info you sent me and jim1947, thanks for the input on dr Romash. My husband is doing all the hard work! he is my hero, and my mom is coming all the way from Spain n the 10th to help…so Im getting a lot of support and mentally i will be better with people around me. And special thanks to Patricia for your work in this great website Piedad I was planning to do some light upperbody exercises w/ bands and dumbels on week 2. I’m only allowed to put 25% of my weight on the left so I’m using a walker (post op 1 week today). Yesterday I walked for 1.2m (the farthest I ever gone) but it took me over 1h &30 min. I took a couple of breaks on the way and at night i was tired. The pt told me to walk as much as possible but I don’t want to overdo it….I see the doc in 6 days I guess I better let him know about the weight training I would like to do. I do not think the doc is going to let me near a tread or elliptical any time soon April 13 So I’m at the 2 weeks mark feeling good, walking as much as I can, doing the standard exercises….My pt thinks I should ditch the walker(25% allowed only), but after seeing the doc he wants me to stay with the 25% weight bearing for 4 more weeks >:( then he will xray the hip and we will take it from there. No outpatient pt untill then…. He said I’m doing great but that is what he wants….so I have to do it, I’m scared to mess up the hip. Im starting upperbody light work on my own…I’m sooo disappointed being a “gym rat”. On the othe side my mom came from Spain and keeps me company since my husband is about to go back to work. I have not had so many siestas and free time in my life before. Like we say in Spain “paciencia” (patience?) Piedad May 1 Well, I did not think it would happen to me, but it did. I had some discomfort in my calf, then the leg swelled up then pain in the entire leg from thigh to ankle. I called the doc and he sent me to do an ultrasound and they just put me in the hospital. I spent 6 days with IV (heparin) and they did an angiogram inyecting solution to try to dissolve the multiple clots I had on the leg. They left the catherer on my leg over night with the solution working and the next day took pictures of the veins and by then(day 4) decided it worked and took it out. The vascular surgeon thinks it cleared the clots. I will be on coumadin for at least 6 months, and I have to wear the TED again…..This has been an scary experience, unable to move at all. Now thank God I’m back home since yesterday and I’m able to resume the walk and the exercises. This whole thing is very discouraging since I was doing so well my home care nurse had discharged me a week earlier. I think I waited too many days before calling in and I blame myself for that. I was walking over 2 miles at day but that is not even close to what I was doing in terms of exercises even with a bad hip. I get to see them in 2 weeks and I have to get my blood drawn every couple of days to regulate the coumadin. If anyone has swelling of the leg that does not go away when you ice and elevate, pain(feels like an extreme soreness), redness, call your doctor RIGHT AWAY. Piedad (excuse my grammar, english is my second language) May 9 Today I went for my six week check up and the x-ray looks good. I’m finally off the walker and restrictions. I will be able to go to outpatient pt and pool therapy. I went to our beautiful oceanfront and walked around for the first time without the walker. It was sooo liberating!!. I feel a little unsteady but I think it is normal… After all the ups and downs I had it was very emotional. I will be on meds for blood clots for a while as a precaution (6 months), but the legs are feeling good These 6 weeks have felt more like months. I want to thank everyone for your experiences, stories, information, jokes and all the kind words. Spin bike, here I come….(well maybe the recumbant bike first yuck) Piedad March 12, 2012 Hip Resurfacing Topics / One year anniversary March 12, 2012 I had my 1 year follow up today and the doc was very happy with the outcome, he is going to let me run finally!!! I have been teaching group exercise since july (kickbox, zumba step….) but he told me no high impact or running for a year. Well I had been doing some light jumping (plyo) after 6 months and was a little nervous about today. I have been taking yoga and that has helped a lot with flexibility. I wanted you to know that I have not been posting much but I have been reading on everyone weekly in this wonderful site. On the other side, Im still on coumadin therapy until the end of April from several DVT’s I got after surgery. The vascular surgeon who is treating me is sending me to a hematologist to have some genetic tests of some sort… This whole process took a while …. my advice to all of you is to be PATIENT (i wasnt at the beginning and ended up surrendering to the doc’s guidelines….he was right. I was not. I tried running at 6 months and didnt feel good so I gave up. Now I feel I’m ready and stronger. Im going to try to run the rocknroll half in va beach in September….anybody coming? Oh yes, do not forget to wear your TED when the doc tells you even if you cannot stand them!! Thanks to everyone that posts in this site..and of course Pat you are like our mom. Thank you Besos a todos Piedad |
