December 4, 2017 – Fifth year still had some nice improvement (believe it or not).
This also marks my fifth season back playing soccer. Every season I’ve had little nags here and there (Achilles, hamstrings, calfs, etc) but the hip has been injury free. When my conditioning wanes a bit in off season I can get that “achy” feeling after an hour or so playing. But if I use the foam … Read the rest

I have about a week before my surgery next week. I’m a 49 year old female, born with hip dysplasia. I’m an avid rower and a cyclist and I’ve had bone-on-bone arthritis for at least two years. I was able to ride and row all season, and even got in one of each over the holiday weekend, which I’m happy about.
If it weren’t for this site I’d be having a hip … Read the rest
19 Month Update May 2019
I’ve just got back from the 2019 Pontevedra ITU Aquathlon World Championship race for male 55-59 Age Group.
What an amazing experience – loved it!
I placed 36/40 in my age group race – 1K open water swim then transition into 5K run.
Swim was cold (14 degrees) and up to halfway against a strong current – I placed 39/40 – it was tough as I’m not a strong swimmer.… Read the rest
I have been cleared for all activity without restrictions. I am now playing singles tennis without holding back. I am out of shape (for 95 degree singles tennis), and still feel not as flexible or as strong, but have had no pain even after 2 hours of drills and playing. The hardest thing I find doing is bending and staying down, but I have been standing straight for over 10 years. I expect to continue … Read the rest

Just had bilateral resurfacing with Dr. Su. I too was forced out of the butterfly after about 40 years playing, and became more of a Phil Esposito. I went in for surgery on a Thursday came out Saturday and was hobbling around my house on Sunday without my crutches. I’m 50 and the Same basic size as you. You should consider bilateral. I will post as I get deeper into the … Read the rest

Had a BHR on my left hip last Sept 20. I had had arthritis from a previous hip fracture accompanied by severe IT/knee pain. Post-procedure, everything had been going extremely well–I was following the fairly conservative recovery program prescribed by my doctor (no lifting or weight training, no high impact for a year post surgery) and I felt really perfect, but all of the sudden one day a couple weeks ago, it … Read the rest
I should have written this article some time ago so others could know my experience with hip resurfacing. Dr. Peter Brooks of the Cleveland Clinic performed the surgery to resurface my left hip on January 18, 2012 and I just recently had my five year checkup. He used a S&N BHR. At that time, I was 74 years old and had been running … Read the rest

On the 7th July, 2017 , I celebrated my 3rd Anniversary of BHR Left side. Wow, how the time has disappeared and how I am able to compete “pretty well” in Triathlon, all be it , at Sprint and Standard Distance.
The hip has never been better and I attribute this to alot of patience in the re-hab,[ a fantastic “nurse”- the wife] ,lots of precise, … Read the rest
8 Year Update July 13, 2017 – 8 years and still going strong. 64 years, very active, hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, weight training, 3400 miles on road. gravel, and mountain bikes in 2016. Never any issues, hips totally pain free. Aches and elsewhere lol! Thanks to Pat for this site, great info. BHR’s changed my life.… Read the rest
I am 5 years out of a BHR on the right side. I have always been a runner, but it did take me 4 years to get back to running. My hip just wasn’t strong enough and I had a lot of failed starts. But after years of PT work, I am back full swing….
I ran the Cherry Blossom 10 miler and the GW Parkway 10 Miler races in DC this spring. I had … Read the rest
Update May 27, 2017 – I’m sharing my story because I know that there are others who are experimenting with what it is possible to accomplish physically with resurfaced hips. I have been a life long runner, although the only official race I ran was the Marine Corp Marathon in 1987 at age 30, time 3:14. I was running 7-9 miles on mountain trails when I first felt the hip … Read the rest
April 29, 2017 – This thread is to update my progress after five years on my second hip. I am now going on 71 years and will be taking the National Ski Patrol classes this summer and plan to be an active Patroller this winter at the ski areas in the Midwest that are near me. I have enjoyed cross country ski races of 25K, biking of over 100K in … Read the rest
