Steve’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Schemitsch 2015
I had hip resurfacing done May 2015 on my right side. I’m 53 and suffer from osteoarthritis. Overall I am happy with the surgery and am totally pain free now. I will eventually need to get my left side done and will follow Dr. Schemitsch to London for current follow ups and eventual surgery. There are only a handful of Dr.s in Canada that do the resurfacing procedure and it is normally the best option for active men under 60-65. There are a lot of precautions to follow post surgery such as the 6 weeks no weight bearing which resulted in muscle atrophy in my right foot, the self administered blood thinner needle shots into your stomach for 20 days and a lot of sleepless nights the first few weeks unless you take the drugs provided but after the six week period you begin to feel normal again. At least that was my experience. I was able to golf in the 3rd month post surgery and can do normal activity again. I can walk and have done 10-15 KM some days. Every surgery has risk and post side effects but I have no regrets. My life is back for now thanks for Dr. Schemitsch’s expertise. I am hoping these resurfacing procedures can last for 15-20 years before the total hip replacement surgery as the last resort and the metal ions will not be an issue.
