On 30th July 1997, Mr McMinn performed the world’s first Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) operation. Two decades later, we are celebrating the success of this bone-conserving procedure, pioneered by Mr McMinn, with the people whose lives have been changed by BHR surgery.
The video and photos that patients have sent in to celebrate 20 Years of Hip Resurfacing has been eye opening and amazing. We couldn’t include everyone in our longer in depth video so we created this shorter and snappier piece to give you a feel of the immense variety of activities that our patients enjoy after their procedures.

November 11, 2017 – It is the eighteenth anniversary of my right side BHR being implanted. It has been well used, is still playing tennis several times a week and has improved my quality of life beyond measure.
The left side one was four years last month – also doing fine.
I post this because I guess it is one of the oldest that are mentioned here and I hope it will encourage people that their hip resurfacing really can last. I remember hoping to get fifteen years or so out of it. Now hoping it will last as long as I do!… Read the rest

Published on May 23, 2017 Australian boxer comes back to the UK for his one year follow up consultation with Mr McMinn and gives us a quick update on his progress. Unsurprisingly, it hasn’t been a quiet year as Anthony returned to the boxing ring 11 months following his surgery, controversially losing out on questionable points decision after seeming to dominate the bout against old rival Danny Green. In this interview, Anthony talks about how his BHR enabled him to get back to his active lifestyle and his desire for another re-match to settle the score… Read the rest
Published on May 23, 2017 Retired School Teacher Pauline Mower had a right Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) under the care of Mr McMinn back in 2004. She returned in late 2016 when her left hip presented problems and there was only one person she wanted to see. In early 2017, Pauline underwent a left Custom Polythylene Hip Resurfacing, a new device pioneered by Mr McMinn and the ideal bone conserving solution for active women like Pauline. In this interview, recorded at her 2 month post-op follow up, Pauline talks about how the pain she felt in her right hip before surgery was different to the pain she felt in her left hip before surgery. She is delighted with the outcome of both of her operations and continues to sing the praises of Mr McMinn and his team.… Read the rest

I had my left hip BHR resurfaced on 20th Nov 2000 by Mr D Mcminn and was working again , landscaping and race driving 3 months later. It’s brilliant and has kept my right hip going much longer than seemed possible ie. 13 yrs , but it now really badly needs doing. I can’t walk far , say half a mile max with a stick plus a lot of pain through my hip/knee and leg. My question to any surgeon willing to reply is ———– Can this be done on the NHS as I’m no longer in the position to pay , as was the case in 2000 and would really like to have this same very successful BHR method on my right hip ?
I live in BUCKS near to the CHILTERN HOSPITAL and have heard that it’s possible to go there under the NHS ” … Read the rest
