Melissa’s Original BHR Story

https://surfacehippy.info/melissa-martin-bhr-revison-dr-ball-2011/

The last two years have brought increasing groin pain, instability, and popping/clunking on a regular basis. Two months before my 4th anniversary I became so alarmed at the consistent instability that I obtained x-rays and cobalt and chromium blood tests. Patient advocate, Vicky Marlow, had several surgeons review them for possible causes of my pain and instability. The following are excerpts from the surgeon’s emails:

1. She needs a revision ASAP before the neck on the femur breaks

2. Neck narrowing due to high ions and there will be some acetabular osteolysis at revision. Yes, early revision is indicated

3. The inclination and version angles are high to start with. The cup appears to have migrated

Much to my disappointment, … Read the rest

I am 4 days post-op (in 4 hrs) and doing fabulous.  We are all different patients, but Mercy Mt Shasta and staff is the best hospital I’ve ever been in and Dr Ure’s office staff is stellar.  Don’t let the small town keep you away.  The hospital is the cleanest and pristine and nursing staff has a lot of ortho experience.  Here’s my story, but feel free to get back to me with questions.
The more knowledge you have going in the more relaxed you will be.  Their pre-surgical joint class is an all-day affair but you get to meet the nursing and therapy staff and they get to know you.  It also included lunch, pre-admit, lab work, and discharge planning.  The staff is totally … Read the rest

Top 10 Reasons I Selected Dr. Ball

Tuesday, November 20. 2007

Three years ago at the age of 37, I was given the news I have osteoarthritis by my family doctor. I was referred to a hip specialist and was told I needed a Total Hip Replacement, oh and by the way, would never again participate in high impact sports. Three other specialists gave me the same news. As the FDA hadn’t yet approved the resurfacing there wasn’t a lot of info available. Since I didn’t like the answer of a THR I decided to do some research on the Internet and came across the Yahoo Discussion Group and that literally changed my life. While the Yahoo discussion group remains a wealth of info this

Kster’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Ball 2009

December 15, 2009

In 2004 I had to give up surfing due to the pain and lack of range of motion in my hips. I proceeded to start knee boarding. It could be fun, but it’s just not the same.

I found out about Dr Ball getting guys back in the water, so I jumped on the resurface as I was a good candidate. In Oct 2007 at age 39 I had my left hip resurfaced, which gave me a lot of relief, but the other hip was still deteriorating.

In Oct 2008 I had the right hip resurfaced also. Between surgeries I started Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP), which gave me a lot of the joy of … Read the rest

I’m 47 and had Bi-lat surgery with Dr. Ball at UCSD went picture perfect (according to the Dr.) I just walked with a walker of course, thru the front door of my home Yes home on day 3 post op. I just want everyone that is having surgery soon or the near future my bone on bone pain is completely gone as soon as I woke up from surgery, and let me tell you that pain was intense. Now my buttcheeks are sore but that pain is nothing and I mean nothing compared to that bone on bone pain. By the way I am only on tylenoyl now for pain. I have had both sides with the ASR.

Had my BHR (right side) installed by DR. Scott Ball and his team at UCSD Med Center Thornton Hospital La Jolla California on 8-9-10.I made my decision to use Dr. Balll mainly through this website and friends and people I have met who have had a BHR installed by him. After suffering a hip injury on my motorcycle when I was 15 and the doctor telling me that it will bother me when I get older( yeah right remember how invincible we felt at 15 )

The pain started appearing in 2003 and after a very painful winter this past year I was ramping up the meds just to make it through work and my … Read the rest

Doctor Scott Ball, Dustyn and Team perform my first of two hip resurfacing/replacement using the Birmingham Hip by Smith and Nephew. Fantastic experience with Doctor Ball and UCSD Thorton Hospital. I’m a 44 year old male who basically used up his hips due to sports. The ball was genetically a little out of round and it caused severe arthritis with virtually no cartilage left. I’m 7 and 9 months out of surgery and can pretty much do anything – like I was 30 again. I highly recommend Doctor Scott Ball and his staff who made the experience truly first class with fantastic results!

Dirk Van Dyke Bilateral DePuy ASR 02/08 03/08 Dr. Ball

7 Year Anniversary – Update

I just celebrated my 7 yr anniversary with resurfaced hips. I was a “staged” bilateral, with the 2 sides done 5 weeks apart, the 2nd one on March 31, 7 yrs ago. I long ago reached the point where I don’t think about my hips when considering any physical undertaking.

With the negative press about resurfacing in general and ASR in specific, I want to give the good report on my 7 yr anniversary. I just reread my hip story from 7 yrs ago that Pat has hosted to remind myself of the early days (https://surfacehippy.info/hipresurfacing/stories/dr-ball/212-dirk-van-dyke-bilateral-hr-dr-ball-2008)
The summary for me is that the surgery has been very successful. … Read the rest

July 28, 2009 My Pre-Op Consultation @ UCSD Thornton Hospital ( Dr. Scott Ball )

Just had my Pre-Op Consultation @ UCSD Thornton Hospital with Dr. Scott Ball’s team. Dustyn is his PA- Physicians Assistant. He is great and will answer any and all questions. They gave me the typical rundown of the risks associated with a Bilateral Resurfacing.

– Possible blood transfusion ( 15% risk ) – Possibility of waking up with THR'(s) – Infection – Total surgery time TBD @ 4-5 hours. – Anesthesia is an epidural blocker ( hip region) with general Anesthesia – I am 39 years old and in good health – ( blood pressure went up today after discussing the surgery. Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 22, 2013 by Patricia WalterJanuary 22, 2013

June 11, 2009 I am six days post surgery and feeling better. I had a rough 18 hours due to H and H blood levels and allergies to pain meds. They were trying to get me up out of bed, but I was so lightheaded that I could not go anywhere. I ended up passing out in the restroom about 22 hours after my surgery, but luckily I knew it was coming and they were able to lower me to the floor in a decent position and they do not think it did anything to the new hip since I have had little pain. As a result of my blood issues, I had to have a transfusion. I was not thrilled and did not really … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 22, 2013 by Patricia WalterJanuary 22, 2013

November 15, 2007 Yesterday I got my hip resurfaced. Today has been ok but yesterday after surgery was quite a rough experience since I’ve never been in the hospital before. I had know idea of what to expect and was very scared prior to the surgery. I came out fine and have started recovery.

Dr. Ball here at UCSD Thornton Hospital in San Diego said the surgery went well and showed my the x-ray of my new hip. In fact he’s come by yesterday and today to check in on me. Everyone had said what a great guy he is and I would say it as well. He’s fantastic!! Especially his bed side manner and willingness to listen to every concern. Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on January 22, 2013 by Patricia WalterOctober 24, 2017

February 11, 2011 So, today is my big day. We woke up at 3:30 a.m. to get showered and dressed for my 5:30 check-in at Thornton Hospital at UC San Diego.

Most everything has gone very smoothly and I can’t say enough good things about the doctors, nurses, and staff here. I was fully prepped and in the OR by 7:30 a.m. A few minutes of bantering with the surgical team is all I remember before waking up in recovery at 10:30 a.m. with a new left hip. At this point I am truly amazed at how easy this has been. When I woke up I had some fairly strong pain at the incision site and my lower back was also in great pain. This … Read the rest

On Nov. 19, 2007 I had my left hip resurfaced by D. Scott Ball at UCSD Thornton Hospital ,La Jolla, CA. I got in 30 days early due to a cancelation so I only had about 5 day window of being “anxious” but due to prayer I was very peaceful all the way up to going under. I was put under at 1:00 and remember waking up about 5:00 with no pain. Did not remember throat tube going in or out or the catheter going in.

Day1 woke up with no pain and walked 200 feet with walker not much sleep. They removed catheter about 3:00 and it was not bad at all.

Day2 Very glad I brought ear plugs to stop … Read the rest
