Jason Hip Resurfacings Dr. Bose 2016 – Dr. Huff 2021
Hi Patricia – we talked a while back after I highlighted my first BHR (Dr Bose) in 2016 for GearJunkie website.
Since then I have returned to competition at a high level in adventure racing and been featured in two pretty cool films/TV shows.
https://vimeo.com/415795433 “With Spirit” a film that chronicles the birth of our twins and a return to race in the Patagonian Expedition Race. Having my hip fail in the 2016 race (when we were winning) was the final straw to getting my first BHR. In 2018, we went back and won, beating the then reigning adventure racing world champions.
https://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Toughest-Race-Eco-Challenge-Fiji-Season/dp/B08BB8S8FJ. “Eco – Challenge Fiji: World’s Toughest Race”. This is a 10 part series released this August that chronicles our the race and features our team heavily as we race to become the top American team.
Both of these races were done (and many others) on my first BHR.
I went under the knife again in Few 17 2021 for the other hip – with Dr. Huff – who is the only Dr. in Oregon that I could find who is willing to do the surgery. I am about 4 weeks post, and having fun with pushing the recovery with the goal of racing national championships in Sept and world championships in Oct.
I am a FULL believer in BHR as an option, and would love to use my story somehow more to spread the awareness of this option – especially for active people and athletes. Most surgeons in Oregon tried to convince me to just have a THR on my left side…still not really believing or trusting the BHR for some reason. IT is frustrating that that is the “story” in the USA.
Dr Huff had a unique view (he only does about 1-2 resurfacing a month) that many docs shy away from it because insurance pays the same for a THR as a BHR, and the BHR has more diffiuclty and potential complications.
Anyway – let me know if there is anything I can do to help of share some of my successes to help inspire others to keep hope and try BHR. Thanks again for your website which was what made a big difference to me back in 2016.
