Dr. Kurtz had an article online that had concerns about the head neck rations of hip resurfacing compared to total hip replacement. We wanted to provide potential hip resurfacing patients with opinions of other top resurfacing surgeons to explain their views. Hi Very nice to hear from you. I’m sorry for the delay in |
I would like to commend Dr. Su for giving
me my life back. I’ve lived with an arthritic right hip for about 5
years until a friend of mine told me about the wonderful world of
hip resurfacing and Dr. Su in particular. I was skeptical about the
whole thing, but I decided to investigate the process. I liked what
I heard and as a result had hip resurface surgery on 7/8/2010.

Adoption of Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty at Hospital for Special Surgery: a Cohort Study
Edwin P. Su and Sherwin L. Su June 4, 2010
Background Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is an alternative to traditional total hip replacement (THR) that allows for the preservation of femoral bone. It is a more technically difficult procedure that has led some researchers to report an unsatisfactory learning curve (Berend et al., J Bone Joint Surg Am Suppl 2:89–92, 2011; Mont … Read the rest

My experience with a bilateral hip resurfacing with Dr Edwin Su.
I am 52 years old and on January 3, 2011 I had surgery to repair
both hips. I have been physically active my entire life, and
exercised 3 to 4 days per week including both cardio and weight
training. I played ice hockey in college, and continued to play
competitively until age 30. I enjoyed running outdoors, and loved
riding my bike regularly. I … Read the rest
My name is Brian Day 58, I live in Flanders, NJ. On Tuesday April 26 I had bilateral hip resurfacing at HSS by Doctor Su. On Wed. morning they got me out of bed and I walked 2 steps forward and 2 steps back and then repeated it, that was it for the 1st pt session. On Thursday afternoon I was on crutches and navigated a 4 step staircase, and at noon on Friday they |
I am a 52 year old female and had right hip resurfacing at the Hospital for Special Surgeries on July 6, 2007 with Dr. Edwin Su. Prior to that surgery I had had arthroscopic surgery to my right hip in 2002 for a labral tear that I had probably had for 30 years. I was a gymnast in college and had on and off pain since then. After the arthroscopic surgery at the HSS I

Knowing the cause of resurfacing failure can ensure successful conversion to THR by Edwin Su, MD The shell can be retained in cases involving femoral neck fracture, femoral loosening or impingement. March 2010 Causes of failure “The cause of failure must be carefully assessed prior to the conversion surgery in order to ensure an optimal THR outcome,” Su said. He noted that femoral neck fracture is the primary cause of short-term failure in resurfacing procedures. |

What Surgical Approach do you Use? I like the posterior approach for the excellent exposure that it provides (which is critical for the positioning of the implants) and the ease of recovery for the patient. There are some who believe a trochanteric flip (Ganz osteotomy) or anterolateral approach are better for the blood supply, but we saw from Mr. Treacy’s data that there wasn’t any difference in outcomes between the posterior and anterolateral approaches. Also, |
I received a BMHR from Dr. McMinn in May of this year. The reason I went to him was for a couple of reasons: my hip had progressed to a point where DeSmet and a number of surgeons in the US did not feel totally confident they could do a resurf. And, even if they could, they would not be able to address the 1″ length discrepancy. My bad hip was about 1″ shorter than |
