|Birmingham Hip Resurfacing through Anterior Incision|
Three days in hospital, two weeks with walker, eight days with cane and back on my two feetI was a somewhat serious runner in the nineties (five marathons) but had tapered to three miles three times a week while playing tennis (doubles) three times a week. I started to notice an onset of pain while running and playing tennis and eventually decided to see a doctor. I live in the New Orleans area and this was during the Katrina rebuilding so I was only able to get an appointment to see and Orthopedic Assistant. He took one frontal X-ray and said “Well, I see the problem”. Looking at the x-ray he pointed out the hip sockets where there appeared to be no space between the ball and socket and described how there should be and said space should be filled with cartilage. He

Even though my specific case is atypical, my story is not. I call it atypical in that my need was not due to Osteoarthritis, wear and tear, running (in high school I was a athlete), or over weight. The only explanation for my dramatic loss of cartilage in my hips was that I have Psoriatic Arthritis (PA).
About 3 and a half years ago, after a routine check up with my rheumatologist, when I had my major joints X-rayed for their 2 year update, she called me up with the results and mentioned that I should replace or resurface my hips, as I have no cartilage in my right hip and 25% left in my left. If I wasn’t seeing a doctor based out of the Cleveland Clinic, I question whether resurfacing would even have been mentioned.

I am a 55 year old female and have had arthritis in my hips for several years. In February 2012 I started experiencing pain which led me to consult an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays revealed bone on bone along with a bone spur. Doctor wanted to do total hip replacement. I was not in that much pain and did not want to move forward. He told me when I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do, come back.
In February 2013 I knew it was time to do something, but I did not want total hip replacement. Fortunately, my family doctor, Dr.Zimmerman, recommended I make an appointment with Dr. Kusuma to see if I would be a candidate for hip resurfacing. After researching the procedure on line, I was impressed and knew this was what I wanted so I … Read the rest

Before surgery, Dr. Sharat Kusuma and associates were recommended to me by two friends that had successful hip treatments.
I went on the minimally invasive orthopedics website to investigate my options for treating my sore left hip. X-rays showed a spur and arthritis. The hip resurfacing procedure looked like an option.
On November 2012 Dr. Kusuma determined that I could have the hip resurfacing procedure.
He and his staff explained all the details. I even watched an operation of this kind on the web. It did not look that bad.
Finally my surgery was scheduled for April 24, 2013. After walking 9 holes of golf on April 22 with a painful ending, I knew why I was having the surgery.
It has been eight weeks now and I started hitting short wedge golf shots on Sunday June 23.

I am 6 weeks out from my Birmingham Hip resurfacing operation. I had the surgery with Dr.Kusuma at Grant Bone and Joint Center in Columbus Ohio. I’m sorry I waited 2 years to be able to walk without pain again. The staff at Grant Medical Center was awesome. The surgery went well and the recovery is going well.
I had been having problems with my right hip for about 2 years. It got to a point where my leg would give out as I was walking – so it was time to get something done about it. SurfaceHippy has a lot of information, but I was pleased to get all my remaining detailed questions answered before my surgery. It was comforting to know that Dr. Kusuma had worked and trained extensively with the developers of the Birmingham hip replacement.

Chris H’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2012
As a gunshot survivor, I suffered from partial paralysis that led to the eventual degradation of my right hip. At age 16, I had a major hip reconstruction that left my right foot mostly paralyzed — this was a very sad and unexpected outcome from what I thought would be my "saving grace." Unfortunately, Hip Resurfacing was not a known or popular option 22 years ago.
I was lucky to come in contact with the surgeon, Sharat Kusuma, through a family member. He welcomed my condition with open arms and strongly suggested the hip resurfacing procedure. At that time I was in immense pain in my lower back and neck, and was also desperately hoping for something to help with strength and my walking gate.
I decided to go for it!
It is now 14 months after the surgery and I … Read the rest
Ron’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2010
My name is Ron and I am 65 years old. I have always been a busy body and love to work outside on my pool and then yard. I have always been an active person. 3 years ago, I began having pain in my left hip that caused me to limp and I was unable to do a lot of things that I normally would do.
I went to see Dr. Kusuma at Grant Medical Center. He informed me that I had hip OA. He gave me a steroid shot and I felt great…for only a week, unfortunately. Next step was surgery. I was a candidate for a BHR. I had the surgery in October 2010.
Upon waking from anesthesia, the arthritic pain was GONE!! Of course, there was the typical postoperative pain and soreness but by the third week, I was wanting … Read the rest
John Vukovich’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2013
When I learned about the arthritis in my hip by my family doctor, he recommended talking to Dr. Kusuma. On my first visit he explained all of the options that were available to me and told me that it was my choice what course of action I wanted to take if and when the pain became worse.
When the time came that the pain medicine quit being effective, we discussed the temporary fix that the cortisone shot would have, but I wanted to hear more about the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. He explained that more of your hip joint is left intact compared to a normal hip replacement. I was impressed to learn that he went to Birmingham, England to learn from the doctor who invented this procedure. I was confident in my decisio9n to go through with the surgery.

Jeff Asman Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma 2012
My name is Jeff Asman. I am a commercial industrial painting contractor I am currently 54 years old and I live in Dublin Ohio. In 2009 I went to a orthopedic back doctor for a strained back I hurt while playing golf, my x-rays revealed that I had not injured my back as I had suspected but that I had some arthritis, nothing serious, but the x rays also revealed that my left hip was bone to bone and my right hip was close. I had no idea and the doctor told me that I would need a hip replacement in a short period of time.
I had absolutely no idea, and it totally freaked me out I knew that my hips had been tight for a long time but I thought it was my physical make up, I went to … Read the rest

I am in my mid 40’s and 2 post post op from my Birmingham Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Kusuma.
My hip was previously in really bad shape for the past 5 years or so. I had a bad limp and had to do stretches/excercises 20 minutes a day just to keep ambulatory. I had little range of motion and often felt a dull ache. I attribute it to playing a ton of basketball until my hip troubles became an issue when I was about 35 or so.
My primary care physician recommended Dr. Kusuma and I couldn’t be happier with the results of the surgery. Dr. Kusuma and his support staff were excellent as was my experience recovering in Grant Hospital in Columbus.
I’m now doing pretty much everything I want to do and it’s only been 2 months.… Read the rest
No regrets – live life while you can!!!
In 2009 I was 34 and running about 20-30 miles per week and surfing every chance I had, but something wasn’t right. It was taking more and more miles on the road to get my stride warmed up and pace going and when I surfed I was feeling more and more stiff; since I worked behind a desk during the day I just attributed these symptoms to desk legs. In November of that year the pain came on and I could not even run around the block, let alone pop up on the surfboard. In January my chiropractor orders x-rays when treating me for my lower back pain and low and behold I was told I had the hips of an 80 year old.
My local orthopedic recommended Dr. Sharat Kusuma and the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure, but a procedure like this … Read the rest
