Jerry C’s Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Poole 2014
May 14, 2014
My name is Jerry and I had hip resurfacing surgery on my right hip 2 weeks ago. I am 54 years old and live in Meridian Idaho. My recovery is ging very well I think. I am walking without a cane or crutches for the last week or so. Very little pain just a deep bruise stiffness sensation. Doing my exercises faithfully and was just referrred to a physical therapist. I have the left hip surgery on 6-9. Hopefully my progress will continue and the right leg will be strong when I have the second surgery!

I had my right hip done on 4-29 and am having my left hip done on 6-9. Prior to arthritis in both hips I was a fairly decent player. Handicap was a 1 at my best. Age and arthritis really took its toll on my game. Well I am hoping its more athritis and less about age! My driver distance used to be 260 to 280 on a solid shot. Before surgery however I was lucky to hit it 220 yards. My buddies would ask me if I hit a driver on that shot! I still beat them most of the time though. A good short game usually prevails. I hope to regain the lost distance after both hips are replaced. Hopefully I will spank the ball past my buddies and I can ask them if they used a driver!

My doc took me off restrictions after 3 weeks and 2 days!! Went to the driving range later that day and hit a bucket. Easy wedges at first to test out the hip. By the end of the bucket I was actually hitting some drivers out there about 225 yards. Left hip is bad though so that stops my hip from clearing. Nice to be out there though!

Played my second 18 hole round today 4 weeks post op RT hip. First round was riding a golf cart. Second round I walked the 18 holes and used a push cart instead of carrying my clubs. Not back to the seventies yet but 80 and 82 are not too terrible.

I am amazed at the differences in restrictions between surgeons following surgery. My doc is the only surgeon on the list of docs on this site in the state of Idaho. He is very highly regarded by both other docs and patients alike. I think I waited about 6 months just to see him. He was trained by Mcminn in England in 2006 and has done about 600 resurfacings to date. I really did not expect him to give me the full green light to golf so soon. When he told me I had no restrictions I was not sure if he tells all his patients that soon or if he felt by my x-rays and progress so far with PT I was ready. I do not want to do anything harmful or potentially damaging to my new hip and would never have golfed before given his blessing. Played 18 again yesterday and walked the course. New hip felt much better than the bad one. Still can not hit ball out of my shadow but an 81 is ok.

I am 5 and a half weeks post op on Rt hip now. I am having surgery on the Lt hip this Monday the 9th. Not very excited about quick turnaround surgery 6 weeks later but I guess they will heal together. My right groin area I notice the last few days has been a bit more sore. I have been off anti-inflammatory meds for the last week due to the upcoming surgery. The soreness is not too bad but I do notice a difference. Could this be the psoas tendon area that is causing this soreness?

Only spent 1 night in hospital this time! Surgery went well. Dr. said there were so many bone spurs in acetabulum that the joint was nearly fused. There were even small chunks of broken off spurs floating around in there! Guess that explains why that hip was worthless on the golf course.

I have noticed a substantial difference in my energy level after second surgery which was done 6 weeks after first one. excerising and walking around seem tougher to do. Will take some time to recover I suppose.

Made my third lifetime hole in one while on vacation in Park City Utah over the weekend. It had been 8 years since the last one and I had my original hips back than. Life is good.

I had BHR on both hips. Surgeon was Colin Poole who practices in Boise Idaho region.
Recently had 1 year checkup for bilateral resurfacing. X-rays looked perfect and metal levels were 3.4 for chromium and 1.8 for cobalt. I was relieved to hear this because I have a co-worker that had to have a revision because of high metal ion readings.
